Impact Statement
Last year we facilitated sight-restoring cornea transplants and other eye surgeries for over 300 patients. After five years of great success preparing corneas for specialized transplants, in 2011, we became the second eye bank in the nation to add two newer technologies, and are writing protocols for yet another. Our Board conducted strategic planning and developed goals for outreach to, retention of, and collaboration with other organizations and individuals for the purposes of service improvement to our constituent physicians and patients. We had very positive and supportive responses from the area hospitals and health systems with which we work, who recognize the impact the organization has on our own community.

Blind and Vision Impaired
Program Description:
Major programs are Technical and Educational. The Technical program includes the recovery of donor eyes, and the preparation, processing, evaluation, preservation, storage, and distribution of corneas for transplantation. The Educational program includes providing multiple educational formats for health care professionals, morticians, clergy, and the lay public regarding the need for donor eyes and procedures related to becoming an eye donor.
Program Long-Term Success:
Since our founding in 1973, the Central Ohio Lions Eye Bank has provided over 11,000 patients with the opportunity to have their vision restored through corneal transplantation. We have provided many thousands of donor eyes for vision research and for advanced education in ophthalmology, helping to improve eye care and physician training. Our long track record of quality has maintained our reputation among transplant surgeons who have relied on us for nearly 40 years to provide excellent transplant tissue for helping them surgically restore their patients' vision.
Program Short-Term Success:
During 2011, we were able to provide 380 patients with corneas and other eye tissues for sight-restoring transplant and graft surgeries. During 2011, we also passed our US FDA inspection and received a 3-year recertification from the Eye Bank Association of America, the highest certification attainable. We instituted another new technology for preparing specialized corneal transplant tissue, and began offering new options to glaucoma surgeons needing human eye tissue for surgical filtering procedures. Our Technical Director and laboratory received special accolades from inspectors, underscoring the benefits of our emphasis on quality work. We are in our second year of participation in a two-year NIH-funded eye research study, using a prototype technical device for measuring and photographing corneas. The project will ultimately make it possible to easily detect previous refractive eye surgery in the eye donor population.
Program Success Monitored by:
The Central Ohio Lions Eye Bank's success is monitored through an extensive Quality Assurance program that examines all aspects of the technical operations, from processes to surgical outcomes. Meeting and exceeding medical standards set by the Eye Bank Association of America and the US Food and Drug Administration is a continuous expectation that is borne out in a demonstrated track record of successful patient surgeries.
Program Success Examples:
Funding Needs
Our funding needs include technical equipment, such as a digital slit-lamp microscope ($29,000); an OCT for determining the thickness of a laboratory-prepared cornea ($49,000); a femtosecond laser (about $300,000) for scientifically advanced corneal preparation; and varying amounts ($1,000 +) for sponsorship of professional and public education activities and materials.
