Program: Clinton Global Initiative

Budget:
$19,631,000
Category:
General Code
Population Served:
General Public/Unspecified

Program Description:

The Clinton Global Initiative is a project of the Clinton Foundation that brings together a community of global leaders, university students, and private citizens to identify and implement innovative solutions to the world's most pressing challenges, including poverty alleviation, climate change, global health, and education.

Program Long-Term Success:

By building partnerships among world leaders from a variety of backgrounds, the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) creates a unique opportunity to channel the capacities of individuals and organizations to realize change. To fulfill the action-oriented mission of CGI, all members devise practical solutions to global issues through the development of specific and measurable Commitments to Action. To date, CGI's members have made more than 1,700 Commitments to Action valued at $57 billion, which have already improved more than 200 million lives in over 170 countries.

Program Short-Term Success:

The CGI Fifth Annual Meeting, held in September of 2009, marked the fifth time global business, government, and nonprofit leaders have come together to focus on taking action in the areas of economic empowerment, education, global health, and energy and climate change. President Clinton welcomed President Barack Obama during the opening plenary session to kick off four days of discussions led by Queen Rania Al Abdullah, Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton, Al Gore, Wangari Maathai, Paul Farmer, James Dimon, Lloyd C. Blankfein, Brad Pitt, and Matt Damon, among others. The 2009 CGI members made 282 commitments with an estimated value of over $8 billion. Once these commitments are fully funded, they are projected to positively change the lives of 197 million people.

Program Success Monitored by:

Much of the inspiration for CGI members’ work happens at CGI events, where heads of state, government and business leaders, scholars, and NGO directors work together to analyze and discuss solutions to urgent global issues. CGI Annual Meetings have brought together more than 125 current and former heads of state; 14 Nobel Peace Prize laureates; hundreds of leading global CEOs, heads of foundations, and major philanthropists; and directors of the most effective nongovernmental organizations. The commitments made at CGI are monitored by the persons, organizations, businesses, and governments who are working together on specific projects. Overall progress and implementation is also monitored by CGI staff.

Program Success Examples:

Because of the efforts of CGI’s members: More than 10 million children have gained access to a better education. More than 650,000 people have learned new professional skills. The equivalent of 60 million metric tons of CO2 emissions have been cut. More than 33 million acres of forest have been protected or restored. Enough clean energy has been generated to power more than 400,000 homes. 48 million people now have access to better health care. More than 12 million people have access to safe, fresh drinking water. More than $150 million has been invested in new medical research. 34 million people have access to treatment for neglected tropical diseases. Nearly nine million people have new jobs or income-generating opportunities. More than $600 million has been invested in or loaned to small and medium-sized enterprises. More than three million people have better access to information technology. Almost three million micro-entrepreneurs have been empowered through microfinance.

Program: Clinton Climate Initiative

Budget:
$12,543,000
Category:
Environment
Population Served:
General Public/Unspecified

Program Description:

The Clinton Climate Initiative is making a difference in the fight against climate change in practical, measurable and significant ways, by working with 40 of the world's largest cities to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. CCI is assisting partner cities to make energy-savings improvements to buildings, transit systems, lighting and waste management.

Program Long-Term Success:

The William J. Clinton Foundation launched the Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI) to create and advance solutions to the core issues driving climate change. We take a holistic approach, addressing the major sources of greenhouse gas emissions and the people, policies, and practices that impact them. Working with governments and businesses around the world, CCI focuses on three strategic program areas: increasing energy efficiency in cities, catalyzing the large-scale supply of clean energy, and working to stop deforestation.

Program Short-Term Success:

  • In December 2009, Fourteen of the world’s largest cities committed to take steps over the next year to make their cities more electric vehicle-friendly, forming the ‘C40 Electric Vehicle Network’ in collaboration with four leading vehicle manufacturers and the Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI).
  • In May 2009, the Third Summit of the C40 Large Cities Climate Leadership Group took place in Seoul, Korea. The four-day Summit provided opportunities for cities to discuss climate concerns under the theme of Cities´ Achievements and Challenges in the Fight against Climate Change.
  • In May 2009 (at the C40 Summit) The Climate Positive Development Program was created to meet the dual challenge of rapid urban growth and climate change by setting a new global benchmark for leadership in large-scale urban development. Launched by the Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI) in partnership with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), the program supports the development of large-scale urban projects that will demonstrate that cities can grow in ways that are "climate positive," striving to reduce the amount of on-site CO2 emissions to below zero.
  • In April 2009, CCI announced the partnership of a team supporting the retrofit of the Empire State Building which is designed to cost-effectively reduce energy use by 38% and reduce C02 emissions by 105,000 metric tons over 15 years.

Program Success Monitored by:

The Clinton Climate Initiative’s effectiveness draws from several core strengths:

  • We operate at the nexus of business, politics, and environmental groups, where there is tremendous opportunity for bridging understanding.
  • We take an analytical approach to complex problems and produce viable business solutions.
  • We have global scale and reach, and the ability to convene leading experts from the private, public and academic sectors around ongoing partnerships or specific projects.
  • A large part of our work is aimed at helping governments turn pledges to reduce carbon emissions into action through replicable and scalable projects that can be tailored to local conditions. This approach is unique and serves several important functions, including demonstrating how targets can be met in practice, informing further policy decisions, and compressing the timeframe of achieving real emissions reductions.

The people working at CCI and monitoring its programs primarily come from the international business community. Global in background and outlook, we have deep institutional understanding of how markets and businesses work, and share a passionate desire to shift the world to a more sustainable model.

Program Success Examples:

  • CCI has helped initiate more than 250 energy efficiency building retrofit projects encompassing over 500 million square feet of real estate in more than 20 cities around the world. These include nearly 300 municipal buildings across Seoul, Johannesburg, Houston, London, and Melbourne; significant commercial buildings in Bangkok, Mumbai, Chicago, New York; more than 20 schools and universities; and the two of the largest public housing stocks in North America.
  • Developed a ground-breaking project that will transform the way solid waste is managed with across Delhi, India and prevent 96,000 tons of CO2 from going into the atmosphere each year.
  • CCI has supported the creation, improvement, and expansion of bus rapid transit (BRT) systems in Johannesburg, Mexico City, Bogota, and Sao Paulo and the planning of bicycle networks in Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires through our partnership with the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP).
  • CCI is stimulating the market for advanced, energy-efficient street and traffic lighting in cities throughout the world. We are assisting with street lighting retrofit projects in cities including Los Angeles, Melbourne, and Sydney, and with traffic lighting retrofit projects in cities including Bogota, Houston, Cairo, Rotterdam, and Lima.
  • CCI is developing a portfolio of avoided deforestation, reforestation, and agroforestry projects in Tanzania, Kenya, Cambodia, Guyana, and Indonesia to ensure that tropical forests are managed sustainably, forest-dependent communities are helped to move out of poverty, and greenhouse gas emissions are actually reduced.

Program: Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative

Budget:
$140,047,000
Category:
Diseases, Disorders & Medical Disciplines
Population Served:
People With Aids (pwas)

Program Description:

The Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative (CHAI) is helping to turn the tide on the HIV/AIDS pandemic by working with governments and other partners to increase the availability of high-quality AIDS care and treatment for people in need, lower the cost of essential tests and treatments, and strengthen health systems in the developing world.

Program Long-Term Success:

Right now, there are 33.2 million people living with HIV/AIDS in the world. More than 90% live in developing countries, where access to treatment is much more limited than in the developed world.

President Clinton established the Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative in 2002 to close this gap in access by negotiating lower prices for lifesaving antiretroviral treatment, and by working with governments to improve the national health care systems required to deliver crucial medicines. Since then, CHAI has expanded its scope of work beyond ARVs to increase access to diagnostics and malaria medicines, as well as to address a variety of issues that must be overcome in order to turn the tide of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, including:
  • Supporting governments to deliver HIV/AIDS services to underserved populations, such as children and those living in rural areas
  • Increasing countries' human resource capacity to deliver care and treatment
  • Preventing the transmission of the disease from mothers to their children

Program Short-Term Success:

  • CHAI is launching a new initiative focused on the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV in more than 6 countries. The program focuses on testing all pregnant women, increasing access to primary health and community-based outreach services, providing effective treatment, and offering safe infant feeding choices.
  • CHAI worked with the government of Malawi to help redesign its training approach for laboratory assistance from a three-year diploma course to a two-year certificate program, reducing the time required to deploy 84 new professionals to the nation's labs in rural areas.
  • CHAI assisted the government of Papua New Guinea in the Eastern Highlands in implementing a rural health care program. Early results show the number of pregnant women being tested in the district increased from 50% to more than 90%, while the number lost to follow-up after testing decreased from 74% to 0%.
  • CHAI has negotiated breakthrough ARV price reductions with 8 suppliers on over 40 formulations and negotiated significant price reductions with 12 suppliers for 16 HIV/AIDS diagnostic tests.
  • CHAI's successive agreements have reduced the price of first-line treatments by 50%, pediatric medicines by 90%, and second-line HIV/AIDS medicines by a cumulative reduction of 30% in low income countries.
  • CHAI's first malaria price negotiations reduced the price of one ACT, an effective malaria drug, by 30% and reduced price volatility of artmesinin, the plant extract in ACTs, by 70%.
  • CHAI initiated a pilot subsidy on ACTs in Tanzania which reduced the price in targeted areas by 95% and increased uptake by approximately 45% for people of all ages - 62% for children under 5.

Program Success Monitored by:

The Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative (CHAI) applies a unique business-oriented approach to changing the market for medicines and diagnostics and supporting developing countries to scale up HIV/AIDS care and treatment programs through three main programs:

Access Programs: CHAI’s Access Programs work with generic pharmaceutical companies and other suppliers to reduce the cost of lifesaving antiretroviral medicines, testing and diagnostic equipment, malaria treatment, and nutrition.

Major Programs: CHAI's major programs specialize in specific areas of need, including pediatric treatment, increasing access to care and treatment in rural areas, strengthening countries' human resource capacity for health, and preventing the transmission of HIV/AIDS from mother to child.

In-Country Programs: To ensure that governments can aggressively expand access to HIV/AIDS care and treatment , CHAI assists national governments and their ministries of health to develop sound health care policies around HIV/AIDS, strengthen management capacity, and implement cost-effective and comprehensive national responses to this epidemic.

Program Success Examples:

  • 2.0 million people are benefiting from medicines purchased under CHAI agreements, representing nearly half of all people living with HIV and on treatment in developing countries.
  • 70 countries have access to CHAI's negotiated prices for ARV drugs and diagnostics, representing more than 92% of people living with HIV globally.
  • Over the last three years, the collaboration between UNITAID and CHAI has helped to increase access to ARVs among children and second-line patients by making drugs more widely available and improving market dynamics. The partnership currently provides ARVs to over 300,000 patients in 42 countries, including nearly 200,000 children.
  • CHAI has launched 8 country-specific programs to bring care and treatment to rural communities , home to 70-80% of the developing world's population. These rural areas often lack access to basic primary health care, including HIV/AIDS treatment.
  • CHAI has supported country-specific strategies to increase human resources for health in 9 out of our 10 partner countries in Africa, with interventions including training, curriculum development, clinical mentoring, and recruiting.

Program: Clinton Economic Opportunity Initiative

Budget:
$1,000,000
Category:
Community Development
Population Served:
General Public/Unspecified

Program Description:

The Clinton Economic Opportunity Initiative is helping families and individuals keep more of the money they make by supporting state and city efforts to promote access to basic financial services. CEO also matches inner-city entrepreneurs with successful business leaders to help them grow their businesses and flourish in an urban economy.

Program Long-Term Success:

President Clinton, building on his long-term commitment to economic advancement, established the Clinton Economic Opportunity Initiative (CEO) to help families and individuals in the United States succeed and businesses in America’s underserved communities grow. CEO advances its mission through programs that focus on two primary areas:

  • The Entrepreneur Mentoring Program and the Harlem Restaurant Program promote business-to-business public service, helping entrepreneurs reach higher levels of success.
  • The Financial Mainstream Program helps people access lower cost, safer financial services, and the support they need to develop and sustain good financial habits.

Program Short-Term Success:

  • Developed working relationships with cities and states to increase access to low-cost financial services. For example this past year, the City of Seattle, along with the Foundation and the National League of Cities, launched the Bank on Seattle-King County Initiative. Additionally, the City of Savannah, with support from the Foundation, launched the Bank on Savannah program in April 2009.

Program Success Monitored by:

CEO is working with mayors, governors, and business and community leaders across the country to help spark and accelerate change by helping people get, stay, and succeed in the financial mainstream. It is also advancing business-to-business public service in communities across the United States by connecting entrepreneurs to the support, ideas, and tools that can help them compete and succeed in the marketplace. Progress is monitored cooperatively - with businesses, government/community leaders, and employees working together to ensure that programs are efficient and effecting positive change in the communities being served.

Program Success Examples:

The Clinton Foundation's domestic economic work began in 2002 with the Harlem Small Business Initiative. Since then, the broader Clinton Economic Opportunity Initiative (CEO) has expanded its reach to help more entrepreneurs succeed and individuals and families to get, stay, and succeed in the financial mainstream. Over the years, CEO has:

  • Provided more than 72,000 hours of pro-bono consulting services worth more than $15 million to New York City area entrepreneurs, in association with Booz & Company, New York University’s Stern School of Business, and the New York Chapter of the National Black MBA Association.
  • Worked with ACORN and Operation HOPE to help survivors of Hurricane Katrina claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), securing more than $10 million in EITC funds.

Program: Alliance For a Healthier Generation

Budget:
$800,000
Category:
Food, Agriculture & Nutrition
Population Served:
Children and Youth (infants - 19 years.)

Program Description:

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a partnership between the Clinton Foundation and the American Heart Association, is dedicated to ending the increase in childhood obesity and helping all kids and their families lead healthy, active lives.

Program Long-Term Success:

Nearly one in three children and teens in the United States is already overweight or obese. In the past 20 years, childhood obesity rates have doubled and are now at epidemic rates. If current trends continue, today’s kids could be the first generation to live shorter lives than their parents.

To combat the growing epidemic, the American Heart Association and the William J. Clinton Foundation partnered in May 2005 to create the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. The goal of the Alliance is to reduce the nationwide prevalence of childhood obesity by 2015, and to inspire young people in the U.S. to develop lifelong healthy habits.

The Alliance works to positively affect the places that can make a difference to a child’s health: homes, schools, doctor’s offices and communities, through our four initiatives:
  • Healthy Schools Program: The Healthy Schools Program supports more than 6,000 schools across the United States in their efforts to create environments where physical activity and healthy eating are important and accessible. The Healthy Schools Program receives the majority of its funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to support schools in states with the highest rates of obesity.
  • Alliance Guidelines for School Beverages and Competitive Foods: These voluntary agreements with the food, beverage, dairy and food service management industries, initiated in 2006, have resulted in healthier choices available to students in schools across the country – including a 58 percent decrease in total beverage calories shipped to schools between 2004 and the 2008 school year.
  • The Alliance Healthcare Initiative: The Alliance Healthcare Initiative is a a collaboration with major health insurers, employers and national medical associations to provide children access to at least four follow up visits with their primary care provider and at least four follow up visits with a registered dietitian each year. The Alliance Healthcare Initiative currently provides the benefit to almost one million children nationwide, and plans to grow that number to more than six million by 2012.
  • empowerME Movement: The empowerME Movement is a by kids, for kids initiative to inspire all kids to make healthy behavior changes and to become advocates in their communities for healthy eating and physical activity. The Alliance collaborates with leading youth-development, youth-service and community organizations to engage, educate and activate kids in the Movement.

Program Short-Term Success:

  • In March 2010, America’s leading beverage companies have delivered on a three-year commitment with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a joint initiative of the American Heart Association and the William J. Clinton Foundation, to remove full-calorie soft drinks from schools across the country and replace them with lower-calorie, smaller-portion beverages. As a result of the landmark agreement there has been an 88 percent reduction in calories from beverages shipped to schools since 2004.
  • With its Healthcare Initiative, launched one year ago, the Alliance has built a coalition of major health insurers, employers and national medical associations to provide children with access to at least four follow up visits with their primary care provider and at least four follow up visits with a registered dietitian each year as a part of their regular health insurance benefits. In February 2010, the Alliance announced that Humana and Accenture have signed onto the initiative, increasing the number of covered lives to more than 1.5 million.

Program Success Monitored by:

There is no single cause to the childhood obesity epidemic and no single solution. That is why the Alliance works across the board – with schools, health care, industry, families, communities, and kids, themselves – to make physical activity and healthy eating easy for kids to access. Progress and effectiveness is monitored by all stakeholders in this process, including parents, teachers, businesses, and, most importantly, the kids themselves.

Program Success Examples:

  • The Healthy Schools Program supports more than 7,800 schools in all 50 states helping to transform their environments into places where physical activity and healthier foods are more available to more than 4.8 million students before, during and after school.
  • Of the schools enrolled in the Healthy Schools Program, 83 percent have implemented the Alliance’s school beverage guidelines, 97 percent offer free drinking water to their students throughout the school day, and 93 percent dedicate at least 50 percent of their physical education time to moderate and vigorous physical activity.
  • The Alliance’s empowerME Movement, a by kids, for kids initiative to inspire all kids to make healthy behavior changes and to become advocates in their communities for healthy eating and physical activity, has activated more than 2.2 million teens and tweens to commit to eat better, move more and serve as leaders among their peers.
