Chief Executive

Mrs. Susan Fiske Koehler

Term:

Since Jan 2011

Chief Executive Profile:

Before joining Rolling Readers as the Executive Director in January, 2011, Ms. Fiske-Koehler was development director for the Aseltine School where she increased donations by 50% in her first year. The position as executive director for Rolling Readers is Susan’s dream job. When growing up, her favorite day of the week during summer vacations was Tuesday. That was the day the mobile library truck came to Susan’s street corner. And Susan always checked out the maximum number of books.

Non-profit work is Susan’s second career. Prior to entering the non-profit arena, Susan had a 20 year career in marketing and public affairs that took her from California to Washington, D.C. She has received both the IABC Gold Quill and PRSA Silver Anvil for her work. Prior to moving to San Diego 16 years ago, Susan lived in Tokyo. She is the mother of Matthew, a freshman at Fordham University, and Maggie, a senior at Winston School in Del Mar.

CEO/Executive Director Statement:

Rolling Readers is a demonstration of how a community can come together to break the cycle of poverty for at-risk children. Rolling Readers’ programs are delivered entirely by community volunteers who make a year-long commitment to read aloud to children living in San Diego’s low-income neighborhoods. Hearing books read aloud is a proven intervention that inspires children to want to learn to read—the linchpin of obtaining an education and breaking out of the cycle of poverty.

Rolling Readers staffs its organization to support a nearly all volunteer organization. Currently, just 2 staff, an executive director and a program assistant work to support the program. The cutback to just two staff results from more than just the current economy. Two years ago, the Board made the strategic decision to focus only on San Diego County’s children. Prior to that, from 1992 to 2005, Rolling Readers has chapters throughout the United States. In 2005, Rolling Readers, “spun-off” its non-California chapters which became discrete 501(c)(3) organizations. In 2009, the board decided to return to our roots in San Diego County. With that decision, Rolling Readers lost several major funders including American Honda in Orange County and the Ahmanson Foundation in Los Angeles County.

At this time, Rolling Readers is seeking San Diego corporations to replace the loss of American Honda ($45,000 per year) and foundations to replace Ahmanson ($25,000 per year). These losses are reflected in the financial graphs on the Better Giving website.

We are also seeking capacity building grants to fund a full-time volunteer coordinator ($40,000) who can grow and manage our volunteer program so it meets the needs of low-income children in San Diego. This would free the executive director to spend more time fundraising to ensure program sustainability and overseeing programs to ensure quality.

Program: Read-Aloud Program

Budget:
$100,000
Category:
Education, General/Other
Population Served:
Children Only (5 - 14 years)
Poor/Economically Disadvantaged, Indigent, General
Poor/Economically Disadvantaged, Indigent, General

Program Description:

Research tells us that reading to children can improve their vocabulary skills and enhance their interest in reading. Our belief in this power of reading to children is the basis for the Read-Aloud Program, the cornerstone of Rolling Readers. Each week Rolling Readers’ volunteers read aloud to preschool through sixth grade students in an assigned classroom. The volunteers become an integrated member of the classroom setting by spending time reading to the same children for an entire school year. Reading sessions stimulate a child’s natural curiosity and intellect, promote early literacy skills, and instill a love of learning and books. What’s more, the volunteers provide school teachers with much-needed classroom support. While a Rolling Readers volunteer is reading aloud to a classroom, a teacher is able to devote time to other important activities, such as preparing for the next lesson, giving one-on-one attention to a student, or simply being able to observe her children while they are being read to. Teachers have told us time and again how valuable this “down time” is in helping them be more effective throughout the day.

Program Long-Term Success:

For all children in San Diego County to have an equal opportunity to become literate, fully contributing members of society.

Program Short-Term Success:

Increased literacy and enjoyment of reading in the classrooms in which the program operates.

Program Success Monitored by:

Annual evaluative surveys completed by teachers and volunteers; oversight by the Rolling Readers Board of Directors' Program Committee; regular focus groups with stakeholders including students, parents and school administrators.

Program Success Examples:

Reports of increased interest and enthusiasm regarding books, reading and writing from students, teachers, volunteers and parents.

Program: Book Giveaway Program

Budget:
$50,000
Category:
Education, General/Other
Population Served:
Children Only (5 - 14 years)
Poor/Economically Disadvantaged, Indigent, General
Poor/Economically Disadvantaged, Indigent, General

Program Description:

The Book Giveaway, held twice a year, is the key to the Read-Aloud Program’s long-term impact on children. As expressed by David C. Harvey, president and CEO of the organization ProLiteracy, “Learning to read doesn’t take place in the classroom alone. [It] continues at the end of the school day when parents and caregivers reinforce the reading and comprehension skills developed in school.” Yet without appropriate books in the home, parents aren’t able to reinforce their children’s reading skills. Literacy advocates and experts agree that the biggest obstacle to literacy for our nation’s poorest children is lack of book ownership. Rolling Readers helps to remove this barrier by providing new, high-quality books for each child in the Read-Aloud Program and involving parents by promoting reading as a family activity. Rolling Readers distributes more than 18,000 books each year. The value of each and every book is immeasurable. According to recent research, parents who’ve been given a free children’s book are later four times more likely to report that looking at books with their children is a favorite activity, reading is a regular bedtime activity, or that they read aloud more than three times a week.

Program Long-Term Success:

Increased access to books for low-income and other at-risk children.

Program Short-Term Success:

Distribution of over 18,000 free books each year.
