Mission Statement

Founded in 1883, YMCAs collectively make up the largest nonprofit community service organization in America. YMCAs are at the heart of community life in neighborhoods and towns across the nation. They work to meet the health and social service needs of 16.9 million men, women and children.

Ys help people develop values and behavior that are consistent with Christian principles. Ys are for people of all faiths, races, abilities, ages and incomes. No one is turned away for inability to pay. YMCAs' strength is in the people they bring together.

In the average Y, a volunteer board sets policy for its executive, who manages the operation with full-time and part-time staff and volunteer leaders. Ys meet local community needs through organized activities called programs. In its own way, every Y nurtures the healthy development of children and teens; strengthens families; and makes its community a healthier, safer, better place to live.

YMCA programs are tools for building the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. Longtime leaders in community-based health and fitness and aquatics, Ys teach kids to swim, offer exercise classes for people with disabilities and lead adult aerobics. They also offer hundreds of other programs in response to community needs, including camping, child care (the Y movement is the nation's largest not-for-profit provider), teen clubs, environmental programs, substance abuse prevention, youth sports, family nights, job training, international exchange and many more.

Organization: Each YMCA is a charitable nonprofit, qualifying under Section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Tax Code. Each is independent. YMCAs are required by the national constitution to pay annual dues, to refrain from discrimination and to support the YMCA mission. All other decisions are local choices, including programs offered, staffing and style of operation. The national office, called the YMCA of the USA, is in Chicago, with Field offices in California, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Ohio, Indiana, Minnesota and Texas. It is staffed by 241 employees. Its purpose is to serve member associations.

International: YMCAs are at work in more than 120 countries around the world, serving more than 30 million people. Some 230 local US Ys maintain more than 370 relationships with Ys in other countries, operate international programs and contribute to YMCA work worldwide through the YMCA World Service campaign. Like other national YMCA movements, the YMCA of the USA is a member of the World Alliance of YMCAs, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.

History: The YMCA was founded in London, England, in 1844 by George Williams and about a dozen friends who lived and worked as clerks in a drapery a forerunner of dry-goods and department stores. Their goal was to help young men like themselves find God. The first members were evangelical Protestants who prayed and studied the Bible as an alternative to vice. The Y movement has always been nonsectarian and today accepts those of all faiths at all levels of the organization, despite its unchanging name, the Young Men's Christian Association.

The first U.S. YMCA started in Boston in 1851, the work of Thomas Sullivan, a retired sea captain who was a lay missionary. Ys spread fast and soon were serving boys and older men as well as young men. Although 5,145 women worked in YMCA military canteens in World War I, it wasn't until after World War II that women and girls were admitted to full membership and participation in the US YMCAs. Today half of all YMCA members and program members are female, and half are under age 18.

Impact Statement

Our programs and services represent our mission in action. They are a direct response to community needs and provide measurable benefits to Northeast Ohio.

In 2010, the YMCA of Greater Cleveland served 62,386 members—71% of which are families and youth.

We provide a wide range of activities to develop healthy and productive children including sports leagues, swim lessons, gymnastics, dance, martial arts and other youth development programs.

All youth activities incorporate the YMCA Core Values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility and are open to everyone regardless of their ability to pay.

Child Care: We are one of the largest providers of high quality, affordable child care in the Greater Cleveland area. We offer before and after school child care, and preschool and summer day camp programs to working families regardless of their ability to pay. In 2010, over 2,293 children were served through these programs.

Community Youth Services: In response to the increasing negative and high-risk behaviors confronting today’s youth, the YMCA of Greater Cleveland has designed an innovative and highly successful programming model that involves families, schools, the juvenile justice system, collaborating agencies, and the community at large – all of which have an opportunity to make a positive impact on the youth of our community. The Community Youth Services (CYS) division currently offers the following programs in YMCA branches, in schools, and at satellite locations: Youth & Government, Teen Court, Living in Female Empowerment, and Y-Achievers.

Funding Needs

There is a growing need for the services that the Greater Cleveland YMCA provides. To deliver more programs to more people, we must increase our presence in both communities of need and communities of means. Campaign projects over the next five years include:
  • Continue to develop our City Agenda/Urban Initiatives plan
  • Provide additional scholarship assistance
  • Provide additional community programs
  • Expand our nurturing, affordable child care programs
  • Provide drug prevention and anti-gang programs
  • Provide additional support for military families.
  • Childhood Obesity

Volunteer Needs

At the YMCA, volunteers are the heart of our mission – George Williams, the founder of the YMCA in 1844, was a community volunteer who saw a need and created the YMCA to fill it.  Today, there are over 1,200 volunteers that are involved in all aspects of our organization; giving our programs value and demonstrating how much character counts. Volunteers of the Y:

  • Lead our Boards of Directors and committees
  • Raise funds to ensure the Y is accessible to all members of the community
  • Coach our sports teams and teach many of our classes
  • Motivate and support youth in building the character strengths, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health, smart life choices, and the pursuit of higher education and goals
  • Extend a hand to help adults who want to do more, be more or live healthier
  • Advocate for the Y’s efforts to influence policies and initiatives that positively impact societal issues of importance to the nation, and your community
  • Participate in opportunities to give back and support neighbors

Y breaks ground on new Warrensville Heights branch
May 02, 2011

A cadre of public officials turned out May 2 to help break ground on a new Warrensville Heights Family YMCA, one of the first buildings to be constructed at Warrensville Heights Town Center on Northfield Road. The branch is expected to open in spring of 2012.

U.S. Rep. Marcia Fudge, who previously served as mayor of Warrensville Heights, was on hand along with Cuyahoga County Executive Ed Fitzgerald.

The $8 million, 40,000 square foot branch is a joint partnership between the Y of Greater Cleveland and the city of Warrensville Heights. It will be one of several flagship buildings to be constructed at the city's Town Center complex. The 16 acre site will also be the home of a new 25,000 square foot Warrensville Heights Public Library, as well as future city developments.

Both the Y branch and the Cuyahoga County Library are being constructed using sustainable design concepts.

A majority of the funding for development of Town Center will come from Issue 13, a municipal income tax increase passed by 66% of voters in May of 2009. The city also plans to tap federal and state sources of revenue for the development. Additional costs for the YMCA will be offset by fundraising.

Y breaks ground on new North Royalton Branch
May 06, 2011

North Royalton Mayor Robert Stefanik presided over a ceremonial groundbreaking on May 6 for a new North Royalton Family Y, slated to open in April of 2012.

The new facility will measure 45,000 square feet and include a 7,000-square-foot rehabilitation center operated by Parma Community Hospital.

The existing site at 11409 State Road, formerly the Avalon Event Center, will be retrofitted to house aquatics, gymnasium space, a segmented fitness center, locker rooms, administrative offices and child care options.

The site was purchased by North Royalton from Citizens Bank of Flint, Mich. for $2.1 million.

Construction costs are being paid for by the YMCA of Greater Cleveland, which has embarked on a campaign to raise $3 million in pledges, with North Royalton contributing $2.2 million.

“It has been the missing puzzle piece for North Royalton,” said Stefanik. “I’m really excited about it, as is everyone I talk to. It’s been one of my (personal) goals since I took office.”
