Program: Lung Health Programs

Budget:
$2,500,099
Category:
Health Care
Population Served:
Adults

Program Description:

Reduce the burden of chronic disease (especially asthma, lung cancer and COPD) throughout the community.

We use Community Health Educators and other trained staff/volunteers to educate communities about how they can address lung health disparities and educate individuals about how to manage their lung disease.  Currently, our programs include: Fight Asthma Now (for youth/teens), Asthma Management (for caregivers), Asthma-Friendly Child Care project, Planning for Action on Asthma and Other Health Disparities in Humboldt Park, Addressing Asthma in Englewood, COPD State Plan, COPD Social Event, COPD Conference, Healthy Lungs Initiative, Lung Cancer Advisory Board, Radon Awareness efforts, etc.

Program Long-Term Success:

Legislation Ensures Smoke-free Illinois Workplaces - After more than a decade of work, our efforts to promote a smoke-free Illinois paid off! Illinois has adopted legislation prohibiting smoking in all workplaces in the state, including restaurants, bars and casinos. The public health victory is expected to reduce state lung cancer rates as much as 20%, and will save more lives than seat belts! Smoke-free Illinois will take effect January, 2008.

Most importantly, we have created the beginnings of a vibrant network that already consists of over 1,750 individuals. The goals of our COPD Initiative are to serve as a resource and inspiration to Metropolitan Chicago's COPD community, to raise awareness regarding COPD, and to reduce the suffering caused by the No. 4 cause of death in the United States.
