Evidence of Impact

Experts recommend Feeding America for its work providing food to needy Americans. Experts have specifically cited the impact of its programs in rural areas of the United States. Experts also cite the organization's reputation as evidence of its impact.

Meeting Needs
Despite concerns about obesity, there are still 1 in 6 children that don't know where their next meal might come from. Food insecurity is still an issue. At a time when both hunger and obesity co-exist, obviously it's more important than ever that food banks are stocked with nutrient-rich foods to help make our calories count. Nonprofit Senior Staff
They help provide supplemental food to millions of American children. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Reputation and Approach
Feeding America's impact is demonstrated by the recommendations of affiliates that have worked directly with the non-profit, the long-term viability of the organization over time, and its commitment to its constituency. I have seen the Feeding America trucks, products, and supply chain partners in the rural area where I live. Feeding America's linkages with local and state efforts to find and provide food for hard-to-locate rural people make it possible for them to receive food in a dignified and respectful manner. Other

Organizational Strengths

Experts say that Feeding America's strengths include its organizational model and its connections and partnerships in rural areas. Experts describe the organization's supply chain and efficient distribution methods as particular strengths. They also say that Feeding America's combination of national and local staffing helps it achieve its aims.

Organizational Model
This organization has national guidance and grassroots across the country. Nonprofit Senior Staff
They have a relatively efficient distribution system and the decentralized nature of their network allows them to respond to local needs. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Connections and Partnerships
Their strengths include their supply chain and their connection to small rural communities through partner organizations. Other

Areas for Improvement

Experts suggest that Feeding America increase the nutritional content of the food it distributes, by finding a way to increase the donation of nutritious foods. Experts also recommend that Feeding America re-tune its marketing and messaging regarding the mission, vision, and operations of the organization.

More Effective Strategy
I don't think Feeding America does enough to promote healthy nutritious foods, I am sure this varies in different areas - I am commenting on the area I am familiar with. They want to feed and often provide quantity not quality. They have an audience and could do a lot more in the area of nutrition education. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Increase Nutritional Content of Donated Foods
As a member organization of Feeding America, I'm not comfortably saying that this organization is a leader in anti-obesity efforts when it has cause marketing campaigns that push things like Snickers Bars and Lunchables. Furthermore, it places no limits on the kind of foods it distributes to its network of food banks across the country. Nonprofit Senior Staff
They should improve the nutritional quality of donated foods by figuring out how to increase donations of the food groups Americans don't get enough of, such as low-fat dairy (milk, cheese, yogurt), whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Marketing and Message
Their marketing often gives the false impression that they are far more efficient and effective in solving the child hunger problem. Their marketing also often harms their own policy agenda by giving the false impression that the problem can be solved without government Nonprofit Senior Staff
