During his career, he has assisted numerous travel companies of all sizes in the areas of sustainable and business development, sales, marketing, finance, and management.
Brian has a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology with a focus on Business from Auburn University and holds a Master's Degree in Recreation Management from Springfield College . CEO/Executive Director Statement:

As your One-Stop Eco-shop, STI is based on an entrepreneurial non-profit model.  While we welcome grant and foundation money, STI is financially sustainable based solely on our programming.  We focus on programs that have real market value for travel providers and consumers, and that bring direct benefit to the social, environmental, or cultural resources targeted by each program.  STI supports creativity in program development and we are willing to test promising new programs in the real marketplace.  We refer to this as a balancing act – at times we support programs that do not create income because of the impact they have on our global community.  Of course, this means that we have to find other programs that provide enough income to carry some of those programs operated at a small loss.

General Public/Unspecified

Program Description:

Many of our world’s most beautiful cultures and eco-systems are located in economically depressed locations.  As a result, travel and tourism are often the largest sources of income in these areas.  Through our work with destination management organizations and travel companies, we have noticed the significant, positive impact that thoughtful planning can have on destinations, particularly the sensitive destinations mentioned above.
STI’s Destination Stewardship services are designed to provide practical solutions for successfully integrating sustainable tourism practices into destination planning and management.  Our services are based on solid environmental and business practices, and focus on encouraging long-term sustainability for the participating businesses.  This destination-wide sustainability strategy is designed to help travelers, travel and tourism companies, governments, NGOs, and other stakeholders support environmental conservation, cultural heritage preservation and regional economic development.

Funding Needs

STI is currently seeking funding to support program development in three program areas: STEP Eco-certification, Carbon Management, and Destination Stewardship.  We seek to expand the programs we currently operate to regions and destinations with limited economic resources, and seek foundation or grant funding to pay for the costs associated with this expansion.

Volunteer Needs

STI seeks professionals and motivated individuals from many varied fields to help expand our reach and improve our operations.  We focus on customizing volunteer positions to fit the interests of our volunteers, and ask only that all volunteers complete any projects they take on for STI.  We also provide internships for course credit at your university or school at our Boulder CO, White Salmon WA, and London UK locations.  Contact annaw@sustainabletravel.com if you're interested in becoming an STI volunteer or intern.
