Impact Summary from the Nonprofit
In 2009, Elder Law of Michigan programs assisted citizens in securing over $5 million in pension benefits and food assistance and identified another $12 million in state and federal benefits for older adults. We contacted 120,000 people to warn them about scams, schemes, and swindles. We also trained 336 judges, prosecutors, and law enforcement officers on how to identify and respond to elder abuse.
Leadership
Mrs. Katherine (Kate) Birnbryer White
Profile:
Kate has led Elder Law of Michigan from "three lawyers in a phone booth" to a nationally recognized provider of legal and aging services. Once limited to serving people in Michigan, the organization has grown to become a national voice in the conversation around independence and economic security for all people at all ages. Ms. White has a background in Humanities, with a Bachelor's Degree from Michigan State University. Her career encompasses experience in the public and private sector in government, aging, employment and training and resource development. She presently services on the State Bar of Michigan's Internal Cabinet, the State Bar of Michigan's State Planning Body, the Michigan Department of Community Health's Consumer Task Force, and the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan's State Advisory Council.
Leadership Statement:
Elder Law of Michigan is growing and evolving to provide a vital and unique service to older adults and people with disabilities. We are committed to continual education and modify our services to meet the challenges that aging brings in America. Our staff is proud to serve clients using technology with a human touch, and person-centered thinking in all that we do. Serving older adults is an honor and a privilege, and I am very proud of our dedicated team of professionals who re-affirm their commitment to quality and innovation each day.
