CEO/Executive Director Statement:

Funding provided by AAPSEF is having a significant impact on student development and achievement.

Elementary Enrichment Coordinators in the elementary schools are able to deliver programs to every elementary school that enhanced the efforts of classroom teachers.

AAPSEF provides funding to ensure every 8th and 10th grader in the Ann Arbor Public Schools was able to take the PLAN and Explore tests - designed to assist students, families and guidance counselors in planning a 4-6 year path of academics for each student to assist the students in reaching their goals.  Effective with the 2012 academic year, the state of Michigan will pay for these tests for all Michigan students having identified them as important elements in post-secondary planning.

AAPSEF is providing support to the district-wide fifth grade instrumental music program to support maintenance of instruments and purchase of new music books.  Ann Arbor Public Schools are renowned for their music programs.

AAPSEF is supporting environmental science field trips for every1st and 3rd grader in the school district.  Support pays transportation and admission fees.  These field trips, while fun for the students, are aligned with the science curriculum and build upon classroom knowledge.

AAPSEF has provided support to the physics programs in every (six) high school.  The AirTracks equipment enables hands on, interactive physics experiments.

In addition to providing funding for programs in the schools, the Ann Arbor Public Schools Educational Foundation facilitates relationships between the community and schools that enhance educational opportunities for students and staff in the Ann Arbor Public Schools.  One such example is The Principal Business Mentor Program launched in January 2012.  This is a five month mentorship with a customer service theme.  Eight principals and eight business partners are involved.

Program evaluation is a part of all grants awarded to the Ann Arbor Public Schools.  We continue to refine evaluation and use of outcome data for measuring impact of donor dollars.

Funding Needs

There will always be innovative programs that the Ann Arbor Public Schools would like to fund but hasn't the money to implement or maintain.  For the 2011-2012 academic year, AAPSEF received over $1,000,000.00 in grant requests from AAPS.  We are unable to fund all requests.  Left unfunded were important programs supporting academic support to all students in Algebra 1 and Algebra II, a stipend to support art supplies at every school, a Fine Arts Fund to support enrichment activities developing the humanities programs in the elementary schools, support for Reading Apprenticeship programs; and funding support for math intervention modules to complement and strengthen the core curriculum.

At this time, the Ann Arbor Public Schools Educational Foundation is working to fund those creative and innovative programs in the Ann Arbor Public Schools that may disappear due to funding shortfalls.  If the current economic climate continues we may be raising money to mitigate class size, purchase textbooks and technology, etc.  In the academic year 2011-2012, class size for most high school classes exceed 32, elementary classrooms exceed 25 in the lower elementary grades and push or exceed 30 in upper el.

Volunteer Needs

Volunteers are always needed for events; August, October, May.  In addition, we seek advocates in each school.  The Educational Foundation has several committees that community members can participate in - grant review, grant assessment, events, marketing, finances, development, etc.

Request for In-Kind Contributions

In-kind contributions can be of almost any kind - promotional materials, ad space, radio time, outdoor billboards, contributions of service or items that we can use at silent auctions or as prizes for raffles.
