- Category:

Human Services
- Population Served:
-
Children Only (5 - 14 years)
Program Description:
Operation Warm provides new winter coats to children in need and supports other philanthropic endeavors supporting the charitable giving program.
Program Long-Term Success:
In just over a decade since its founding, Operation Warm has distributed approximately 600,000 coats to children in need. Our vision is that every child in need who wears a new winter coat will be healthy, able to attend school regularly, have strong self estem and believe that they have value.
Program Short-Term Success:
Program Success Monitored by:
Operation Warm maintains strategic partnerships with many social service organizations such as B.E.L.L., Jumpstart, The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, The Chicago Housing Authority, New York City Clothing Bank and the Harlem Children's Zone. We request a written report from each
Strategic partner. The report includes observations of behavior, attitude, classroom participation, attendance and educational growth from the beginning of the year through year end.
Program Success Examples:
Many of our Strategic social service social partners are developing their own curriculum to link the gift of a new warm coat with a particular educational outcome. For example, The Harlem Children's Zone teachers required that each student "earn" the coat by reading and reporting on three books.
Children at the St. Frances de Sales school were required to bring in an empty plastic bottle to "pay" for their coat. Each of the grades participated in a conservation and recycling curriculum to learn more about our environment and raise awareness of good conservation practises.
Funding Needs
-Management – OW is expanding its grant application reach to include grants that support educational programs as well as grants in support of “green initiatives.”
-Operation Warm has set a strategic goal to manufacture most of our coats from recycled bottles. Getting this program off the ground takes due diligence related to supply line, and best practices that ensure a quality garment at the best possible price.
As our organization expands its outreach to additional markets, (we are currently in 33 states) we need development managers to work with OW Strategic Community Partners to assist in developing and organizing events that have Beyond Warmth outcomes, such as obesity, truancy, and ongoing health issues related to the cold.
-As OW selects regions for expansion , we require feasibility studies to help drive market openings and ensure viability of OW programs in specific markets. Feasibility studies require operating funds that are in addition to general overhead expenses.
