Goodwill/Easter Seals and Minnesota Work Incentives Connection Announce Merger

October 03, 2011

St. Paul, MN (October 3, 2011)— Goodwill/Easter Seals Minnesota, a leading nonprofit organization that assists people to overcome barriers to independence by providing  job training and employment  services, and  Work Incentives Connection, a state-wide organization that helps people with disabilities navigate complex rules regarding the impact of work on their government benefits, have made the decision to merge. The merger is effective October 1, 2011.

Michael Wirth Davis, president and CEO of Goodwill/Easter Seals Minnesota states, “We are very excited to welcome Work Incentives Connection under our umbrella of services. Their services are vital for so many Minnesotans seeking independence and are a natural fit with our employment programs that serve many of the same individuals.”

Barb Smith, Work Incentives Connection executive director, says, “The opportunity to partner with Goodwill/Easter Seals is an exciting one for the Work Incentives Connection. Our missions, visions and values are a great fit and our services complement each other.  Both of our organizations and the people we serve will benefit from this partnership.”

About Goodwill/Easter Seals Minnesota:
Since 1919, Goodwill/Easter Seals Minnesota provides family strengthening, education, workforce development and employment services for people with disabilities and other barriers to education, employment and independence. In the past year, over 15,000 individuals received 31,000 services, including job skills training (automotive, medical office, banking/finance, construction and retail), job placement and free medical equipment loans. Revenues from its 24 retail stores, along with other contributions, support these programs at 48 service locations in Minnesota.

About Minnesota Work Incentives Connection:
The Work Incentives Connection first began as part of a state agency in 1999, serving people with all types of disabilities throughout Minnesota. In 2006, they began operating as an independent nonprofit agency. The Minnesota Work Incentives Connection is part of the Social Security Administration’s nationwide Work Incentives Planning and Assistance (WIPA) program network.

The Connection’s service mission is to provide answers about the impact of work on benefits, so that people with disabilities can see their choices and take advantage of life's opportunities.  This includes promoting policy changes that encourage the employment of people with disabilities.

$1.7 Million Federal Grant Awarded to Goodwill/Easter Seals Minnesota

November 09, 2011
St. Paul, MN (Nov. 9, 2011)—Minnesota fathers and their families will now have even greater access to the responsible parenting programs offered by Goodwill/Easter Seals Minnesota’s FATHER Project. The organization announced today that is has recently been awarded a $1,772,546 Pathways to Responsible Fatherhood grant from the Administration for Children and Families at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). This is the largest one-year federal grant that the organization has received to-date, and Goodwill/Easter Seals is only one of two organizations in Minnesota who received the funding.

“The grant will allow us to continue to strengthen partnerships and services in Minneapolis and expand services to other communities where there is a need,” remarked Goodwill/Easter Seals Vice President of Mission Services, Sheila Olson. “This award enables us to fully engage new partners to offer more comprehensive services to families in urban and rural communities in Minnesota.”

The goal of the FATHER Project is to promote responsible parenting and healthy marriage, as well as foster economic stability for low-income parents. The FATHER Project is designed for low-income fathers, who are non-custodial dads to assist them in becoming more involved in their children’s lives. We serve African American, American Indian, Somali, Hmong, and Latino populations in both urban and rural communities.

This funding will allow Goodwill/Easter Seals the opportunity to expand service delivery, with the help of 20+ partners, into the following counties:  Anoka, Benton, Dakota, Hennepin, Hubbard, Olmsted, Ramsey and Stearns counties in Minnesota. Individuals  served by the program face barriers such as poverty, a history with the criminal justice system, lack of a high school diploma or GED, unemployment or under-employment, child support arrears and/or instability in family relationships.

“A strong and stable family is the greatest advantage any child can have,” said George Sheldon, HHS acting assistant secretary for children and families. “These grants support programs that promote responsible parenting, encourage healthy relationships and marriage, and help families move toward self-sufficiency and economic stability.”

The Responsible Fatherhood program awarded a total of $59,396,652 in grants, which include 55 Pathways to Responsible Fatherhood grants. The marriage and fatherhood grants were awarded through a competitive process and aim to test promising strategies for supporting healthy relationships and marriages and for helping fathers meet their parenting and financial obligations to their children.
