Chief Executive

Arthur Berman

Term:

Since May 2008

CEO/Executive Director Statement:

From President and CEO, Art Berman:
Twin Cities RISE! is an innovative, anti-poverty organization that provides long-term training specifically designed for individuals facing the most barriers to employment and self-sufficiency.

2009 brought many challenges related to the worsening economic environment. We had revenue pressure under our pay-for-performance contracts due to sharply reduced hiring and layoffs. Philanthropic giving was lower as well. As a result, we took significant, aggressive actions to remain fiscally sound. This included consolidating Saint Paul operations, modestly cutting numbers served, eliminating three positions, and reducing management salaries and other expenses.

We were also proactive with respect to programming so that our participants were able to continue on their path to economic self-sufficiency. To that end, we were and are currently providing more support to participants who are particularly stressed, including expanding our successful Internship Program. The Internship Program engages participants in skill development and also provides a small stipend to participants. This program was a home run, providing a valuable bridge to full-time employment. We built relationships with new hiring partners, and our Interns are now succeeding at a phenomenal rate.

As a result of several generous gifts and a spectacular “Music on the Mississippi” fundraising event, we were even able to fully fund the Internship Program and not draw a penny from our reserves. In 2010 we will have 100 Interns in response to the program’s success and a still languishing economy.

As we look ahead we are challenged by the daunting economy and the barriers that persist for our participants. But we are also fortified by the strength and depth of our support – our donors, volunteers and staff are amazing. With this team we are demonstrating that we can not only survive but can thrive during difficult times.
