Mission Statement

CHF International was founded in 1952 as the Cooperative Housing Foundation and, over the past almost 60 years, has grown from a housing focused domestic organization into an international development and humanitarian assistance organization with program in 26 countries, in 5 regions around the world.  Through our programming, we work to be a catalyst for long-lasting positive change in low and moderate income communities around the world, helping them to improve their social, economic and environmental conditions.

Impact Statement

CHF International continues to be driven by a humanitarian mission and guided by high standards of accountability and performance. The ultimate impact of our work is too valuable not to take every program seriously; not to demand the best possible outcome for the time, effort and money invested. To this end, our programs are designed to be realistic: we encourage communities to identify their own priorities and work with them to set achievable objectives that advance their overall goals. Our programs are adapted to each distinct cultural and social context, employing the most appropriate and effective methods to ensure progress is made and forward motion sustained.

Whether rehabilitating schools, roads and water systems or establishing independent financial institutions that will lend credit to low-income individuals to start businesses or build homes, CHF International continues to build a stable, more equitable world, one community at a time.

Funding Needs

A dollar donated to CHF goes a long way. For instance:

• $100 supplies a small business loan to a widow so she can generate income to support her family;
• $300 provides a family with proper sanitation;
• $600 provides a year’s supply of food and water for one growing child;
• $1,000 repairs an existing well that will provide 400 people with clean water;
• $7,000 builds a new well, which could save the lives of 800 people;
• $12,000 builds a new school building, providing children with valuable education.

Volunteer Needs

Since the program started in 1998, Visiting International Professionals (VIP) program volunteers have contributed more than 3,000 days of work to CHF projects in 28 countries around the world, trading high-level skills for a deeper understanding of global communities and hands-on experience solving problems in some of the world’s most challenging environments. This is the kind of exchange that creates lasting impact and helps to ensure sustainability of investment by aligning social and private-sector interests.

As a platform for lasting social and business impact worldwide, CHF’s VIP program serves as a powerful resource for companies investing in volunteering. The VIP program can be leveraged into existing volunteer programs through sponsorship of an employee, covering the costs of participation or through the use of matching funds.
