Mission Statement

Weaving an international Indigenous network, Americans for Indian Opportunity (AIO) catalyzes and facilitates culturally appropriate initiatives and opportunities that enrich the cultural, political and economic lives of Indigenous peoples. Founded by LaDonna Harris (Comanche) and a cohort of her fellow Native American activists in 1970, AIO draws upon traditional Indigenous philosophies to foster value-based leadership, inspire stakeholder-driven solutions, and convene visionary leaders to probe contemporary issues and address the challenges of the new century. Governed by a Board of international Indigenous leaders, AIO also seeks to create innovative international Indigenous interactions that contribute Indigenous worldviews to the global discussion.

Chief Executive

Ms. Laura Harris

Chief Executive Profile:

Laura Harris (Comanche), Executive Director Ms. Harris joined the staff of AIO in 1992 to head up a national Native American leadership development program. Currently, Harris is helping to develop an international Indigenous initiative. She is a trained facilitator in the CogniScope, social system design process. Before joining AIO, Harris was on the original fund-raising staff for the Smithsonian=s National Museum of the American Indian. Prior to that she worked in the Washington, D.C. office of U.S. Senator Jeff Bingaman (NM). Harris serves on the national board of the Center for Policy Alternatives, an Advisory to the National Network for the Anti-Racism Training Institutes, and on the Board of the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy. She is the elected treasurer of the Toyah Band of Comanche Indians of New Mexico. In 1997, President Clinton appointed Harris to a two-year term as Senior Consultant to the President=s Initiative on Race. She has traveled extensively internationally, especially in Latin America. She holds a B.A. in Political Science with a minor in Native American Studies and Latin American Studies from the University of New Mexico. Harris is an enrolled citizen of the Comanche Nation.
