Impact Statement

Since its founding in 1976, JOMDC has earned a reputation for excellence in dance education, diversity of programming, and community service. JOMDC has grown into the largest dance education center in the region. Every year, tens of thousands of children, teens, and adults participate in engaging dance classes, workshops, festivals, and performances at JOMDC's three studio locations and throughout the Washington, DC, region.

Mr. Douglas E. Yeuell

Chief Executive Profile:

Douglas Yeuell plays a major role in the region’s arts community and has led JOMDC since 1989 through a period of substantial growth. Mr. Yeuell has an active career as a teacher and artist at numerous institutions throughout the world. As a dancer and artist, Mr. Yeuell has performed throughout the region as a soloist and choreographer, and is also the director of Jazzdanz/dc. Mr. Yeuell serves on the Board of Directors of the Capital Region Educators of Dance Organization, Dance/Metro DC Advisory Committee, and the Arts & Entertainment Advisory Board of the Bethesda Urban Partnership. He is also currently Acting Chair of the Advisory Committee of the Metro DC Dance Awards, and Chair of Dance Bethesda. Mr. Yeuell was recently awarded the Alan M. Kriegsman Award at the 2008 Metro DC Dance Awards for his service to the dance community.

Program Description:

Through Project Motion Community Outreach, JOMDC extends the reach of its dance education mission to disadvantaged children, teens, and seniors throughout the DC metro area, free of charge. Motion Express offers free weekly dance classes to DC schoolchildren of all ages in addition to interactive performances and artist residencies. Through the D.A.R.E.® Dance America partnership, JOMDC instructors teach free dance classes to hundreds of children in DC and Virginia, providing dance as a positive alternative to drugs, alcohol, and violence. As part of the Summer Jobs Program sponsored by the DC Mayor's office, JOMDC's Step Ahead program immerses high school students in the challenges and excitement of a summer dance intensive and exploration of a performing arts career. Seniors in Motion reaches out to DC area seniors with engaging regular dance classes and performances. The Dance is for Everyone Youth Scholarship Program assists families seeking quality dance education for their children through full and partial scholarships.

  •          Expanded our Motion Express youth dance education outreach to 500 pre-kindergarten to grade 12 students at ten Northeast public schools, as well as other youth service nonprofits
  •          Presented Motion Expressions interactive dance concerts at the Atlas for our Motion Express students in November 2007 and March 2008
  •          Hosted 50 high school students for 10 weeks at the Atlas through our 2008 Step Ahead summer performing arts job skills program 
  •          Added two new schools to our D.A.R.E.® Dance classes for a total of nine schools
  •          Developed Seniors in Motion outreach initiative with regular classes and interactive performances at area senior centers
  •          Formalized the Dance is for Everyone Youth Scholarship Program to benefit young students based on need, talent & potential, and area of residence
  •          Donated to 60 auctions and events for area schools, PTA’s, and nonprofits
  •          Participated in 45 free community performances at assemblies and festivals in Wards 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, and 8

Program Description:

Adult Dance Education  offers 150 dance classes to thousands of adults each week. Ranging from Intro to Dance for beginners to advanced classes for professional dancers, JOMDC provides a complete adult dance curriculum, including its popular performance classes and workshops-leading the region in diversity of dance styles offered. Adults interested in more performance opportunities can audition to be in a hip hop, ballet, or jazz dance company.

Program Description:

Youth Dance Education offers 110 dance classes weekly to 1,000 students ranging in age from 13 months to 18 years, as well as summer camps and intensives. Seven youth companies nurture aspiring performers interested in hip hop, belly dance, jazz, or tap. Our youth companies and award-winning Youth Dance Ensemble share the joys of dance with audiences throughout the region by providing free performances at festivals, fairs, and community events.

Resident Companies and Resident Arts Partners are supported by JOMDC with free rehearsal space and promotional and administrative assistance. DCypher Dance, our resident hip hop company, and Classical Repertory Dance Theatre, our resident ballet company, give free performances at school assemblies and other community events throughout the District. JOMDC also supports ten professional dance companies as Resident Arts Partners: CrossCurrents Dance Company, Dana Tai Soon Burgess & Company, EDGEWORKS Dance Theater, DC’s El Teatro de Danza Contemporanea de El Salvador, Furia Flamenca, Jazzdanz/dc, Life Rhythm Move Project, Nomad Dancers, Silk Road Dance Company, and X Faction Dance Company.
