Mission Statement
GLEANING AMERICA'S FIELDS - FEEDING AMERICA'S HUNGRY.
The Society of St. Andrew (SoSA) was founded to feed the hungry from the bounty God has provided. The Society has a vision of a world without hunger - its goal is to "Salvage Food ... Feed the Hungry." SoSA saves perfectly good, nutritious produce that would otherwise go to waste because it doesn't meet top market grade. The produce is saved by some 30,000 volunteers each year and distributed to thousands of critical feeding agencies across the country. As of the end of 2011 more than 649 million pounds of produce has been saved and distributed, providing 1.95 billion servings to the nation's hungry people.

Impact Statement
Although the poor and hungry are always with us, numbers have grown in recent years. While other nonprofits cut back on services because their donations are also experiencing a downturn, the Society of St. Andrew is stepping out on faith and saving even more food than in recent years and donating it to food pantries, food banks, soup kitchens and other critical feeding agencies so that more people can be fed. Our goal is to continue saving as much fresh produce as possible so as many people as possible will have access to nutritious food.

SoSA is a program-focused organization with annual overhead cost of about 7%. SoSA bridges the gap between billions of pounds of excess food and the millions of Americans who do not get enough to eat. With 25-30 thousand volunteers each year, our programs are simple, effective, and highly efficient.

Program Description:
One major area of food waste is in farmers' fields where crops that don't meet top grade quality are left to rot or be plowed under. Through the Gleaning Network, farmers donate their fields after harvest for gleaning by SoSA volunteers. Since the Gleaning Network was begun in 1988, 180 million pounds of produce has been gleaned by more than 425,000 volunteers, one piece at a time. This food is donated to local agencies in the regions where it was gleaned.

Program Description:
Food growers donate to the Society of St. Andrew tractor-trailer loads of nutritious produce that cannot be sold for cosmetic or market reasons. We arrange to bag, ship, and donate this perfectly good, edible produce to food pantries, food banks, soup kitchens, Salvation Army centers, homeless shelters, Native American Reservations and other critical feeding agencies across the country. Our total cost is about 8 cents per pound. Since the 1983 start of this program, more than 413 million pounds of produce have been salvaged and distributed through the Potato & Produce Project to feed hungry people.

Program Description:
This program educates people about the hunger problem and encourages them to make lifelong commitments to being part of the solution. A program of work, worship and study mission retreats is conducted around the country. Senior high youth attend week long retreats, while weekend retreats are geared toward college students, junior high youth, and intergenerational groups. Participants learn about hunger, its causes and effects. They glean local farm fields, deliver the food to local agencies, sometimes prepare and serve the food to the needy, and perform other agency services.
