Mission Statement
With 12 million Americans - 3 million under age 18 - affected by food allergy, this is a major, worldwide, public health problem. FAAN educates families, schools and child care centers, policymakers, the food industry, government agencies, and the general public about food allergy, while providing funds for scientific and medical research on food allergy and anaphylaxis. FAAN serves as the communication link between the patient and others.

Program Description:
<div>FAAN sells videos/dvds, booklets, cookbooks and other items which provide patients, doctors and lay persons with practical and life-saving information about food allergies and their families. FAAN also has representatives speak at corporate events and restaurants to educate employees about food allergies. Finally, FAAN has about 130 small support groups around the country to provide education and emotional support to families with food allergies.</div>
Program Long-Term Success:
FAAN worked with members of Congress to introduce the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Management Act (FAAMA), which, if passed, will result in national standardized food allergy management guidelines for schools across the nation. By the end of 2007, FAAMA had earned support from more than 70 representatives and 10 senators.

Program Description:
<div>In 2008, FAAN awarded over $1 million in research grants to universities and medical institutions for various food allergy research projects. FAAN has also commited $400,000 to a grant partnership with the National Institute of Health (NIH) to stimulate food allergy research at NIH and to bring more investigators into food allergy research. This grant funding will take place in 2010 and 2011. FAAN has also commited $250,000 over 5 years (to begin in 2009) to a study in the United Kingdom to investigate whether peanut allergy can be prevented by eating peanuts early or later in life.</div>

Program Description:
<div>FAAN raises awareness of food allergies in many ways. Its websites had almost 1.5 million visitors in 2008. Its annual Food Allergy Awareness Week National Effort held each May helps increase awareness and education in local communities. It also sends out alerts to its members and the public regarding recalls of food products. It holds the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Alliance meeting to raise awareness of food allergies. Over 16,000 walkers participated in the walks.</div>
