Mission Statement
Future Generations (future.org) and the
Future Generations Graduate School (future.edu) share a mission to "teach and enable a process of equitable
community change that integrates environmental conservation with development."
The core of Future Generations is a system that communities and governments
can use to shape their futures. This system can create large nature
preserves (as in Tibet, China), rapid social change (as in India), extend
health services (as in Peru), help countries rebound from conflict (as in
Afghanistan), or help communities expand the benefits of technology (as in West
Virginia).
As an action-oriented civil society organization, Future
Generations partners with an accredited graduate school (Future Generations
Graduate School), to implement a three-pronged strategy that involves:
- Field Applications in Afghanistan, China,
India, Peru, and West Virginia in the United States
- Learning and Applied Research to develop and evaluate
community-led approaches
- Extension through Education, a Master’s Degree program
that builds local capacity worldwide

Impact Statement
With an
approach that engages community and government partnerships, Future Generations
raises the capacity of people to create locally appropriate solutions using
primarily local resources for more sustainable impacts. We have:
- Supported a
national system of community-based health care in Peru reaching one-third of the population and reducing chronic
child malnutrition from 46% to 18% in pilot sites.
- In Tibet,
China promoted a new model of conservation that trains local
volunteers as stewards and reduces management costs by working within
existing government structures.
- Launched the
Green Long March, China's largest youth movement for the environment, now
in its fourth year and involving youth from 80 Chinese universities.
- Mobilized
more than 100 women’s self-help groups for micro-credit programs to
improve family income and the status of women in the remote tribal state
of Arunachal Pradesh, India.
- In
Afghanistan, piloted a new approach to training Afghan women as volunteer
community-health workers, which reduced child mortality by 46 percent
in pilot sites.
- In West
Virginia launched a new program that partners with 60 volunteer
fire departments to increase access to computers, broadband, and a range of training programs.
- Trained
community development practitioners from 26 countries.
