Mission Statement
The Bedford Humane Society is dedicated to eliminating
the overpopulation of cats and dogs in Bedford County through education,
spay/neuter programs, and companion animal adoptions.

Impact Statement
Spay/Neuter - BHS operates a low cost spay/neuter program in cooperation with Angels of Assisi's transport, and the South Central Spay Neuter Clinic transport. Surgery pricing is subsidized on a sliding scale, based on owner income. This program is funded through a combination of donations, grants, State Spay/Neuter license plate revenues, bequests and client fees.
Construction of no kill Adoption Center - In 2007, BHS became the recipient of the estate of the late Vernon D Lybolt Jr. The court ruled that Mr. Lybolt's monies were to be used to build an animal shelter in Bedford County. In 2009, BHS purchased a 3.4 acre parcel of land for this purpose. In addition to sheltering homeless animals, the Adoption Center will also serve as a community resource for low cost spay/neuter and vaccinations, humane education, pet training and behavior programs, and a much-needed AniMeals Program.

The Bedford Humane Society is in the process of growth from a grass roots organization of loosely knit volunteers to a full scale animal sheltering operation. Our main focus has always been and will continue to be spay/neuter as the only solution to pet overpopulation. The construction of the Adoption Center will provide a base for our many other programs, including companion animal adoptions, puppy transports to northern states, Animeals, vaccination clinics and more. We strongly believe in community outreach programs that assist and educate the animal caregivers of our area.

Program Description:
Low cost spay/neuter program - we offer low cost, subsidized spay/neuter services to area residents, using transports from Angels of Assisi Clinic in Roanoke and the South Central Spay/Neuter Clinic in Evington. Fees are based on client income. This program is funded through a combination of donations, grants, bequests, and fundraising activities. Low cost vaccinations are also available for pet undergoing surgery.
Program Long-Term Success:
: The goal of this program is to reduce the numbers of unwanted animals entering the tax funded Bedford County Animal Shelter, and the resulting euthanasia rate. Currently approximately 50% of dogs and 80% of cats entering the facility are euthanizied.
In 2009, we spay/neutered 515 area pets of low income residents.
Our goal for 2010 is 700.
Program Short-Term Success:
Many local breeding pairs have been sterilized through our program. These pairs often produce litter after litter. Working in conjuction with our puppy transport program, we vaccinate and provide food & health care for puppies from the household. Adults are then sterilized and puppies go on transport to rescue in northern states, where adopters await them.

Program Success Examples:
Eviction Jan 2010 - seven mixed breed puppies vaccinated, dewormed and sent on transport to CT. Provided food for adults and sterilized both. Family was able to keep adults. Previously, had thought they would need to take all 9 dogs to County shelter. This breeding pair had previously produced three litters.
Eviction Jan 2010 - 6 mixed breed puppies removed to foster home, vaccinated, dewormed, sterilized and sent on transport to CT. Mother dog sterilized and vaccinated. 10 month old dog from previous litter sterilized and rehomed. Owner will now keep sterilized mother dog, who had already produced at least two previous litters.

Program Description:
Forgotten Felines provides spay/neuter, rabies vaccination and ear tipping of feral cat colonies in the Bedford area for a cost of $2 per cat to feral cat caregivers. It's goal is to humanely reduce future populations of free roaming cats, improve the health of those already here, and help prevent the spread of rabies. Live traps are available as loaners to assist caretakers in trapping the cats.
Program Long-Term Success:
This program will:
- Reduce the number of free roaming cats in the Bedford Community
- Improve the health of those free roaming cats already here
- Reduce the number of cats entering the tax funded county shelter
- Improve community health through vaccinations, thereby reducing the spread of diseases such as rabies

Assists community caretakers of these feral cat colonies.

Funding Needs
Spay/Neuter programs - we constantly seek funding to operate, subsidize and expand our two spay/neuter programs, Low Cost Spay/Neuter for area pets and Forgotten Felines (free roaming cats).
Adoption Center - we appreciate donations for the construction of the no kill adoption center. As of March 2010, we are about to select an architectural firm to design our facility. Once a design and drawings are finalized, we will launch a Capital Campaign.
Operating Expenses - we appreciate contributions to Operating Expenses. Volunteers are great, but most already have jobs. We have grown to the point where we need additional staff to carry on daily operations and enable additional growth.
Volunteer Needs
Volunteers are needed for cat/dog foster homes, puppy transport foster homes, cat rescue coordinator, database input/management, fundraising event chairpersons, Animeals program coordinator, property maintenance at headquarters, and a variety of other jobs.

Sign painter, lawn mowing, brush hogging, chipping, carpenter, roofer, financial advisor, veterinary services, etc.
