CEO/Executive Director Statement:

By Bethelhem Tessema
Executive Director

Africa remains a continent where millions of people still struggle with poverty, poor health care, civil war, illiteracy and many other life-altering issues. Everyday too many African families are desperate to receive life’s most basic necessities, food and water, to survive.

Bread and Water for Africa® works with local grassroots African organizations to improve these unfortunate circumstances by providing communities, families, and orphaned children with the basic necessities they need to not only survive, but to succeed. We bring food, clean water sources, safe shelter, medical care, education and vocational training to those who need it most.

We have an excellent reputation, small overhead and do not depend on government funding. Most of our programs are run by volunteers (over 130 of them). Along with our independent auditors, our board members meet four times a year to go over finances and our budget, making sure that our programs are consistently running smoothly and we are using our funds to their full extent.

Financial accountability and efficiency are two of our core values. Our work in FY 2010 reflects these values as 99.5% of your donations went directly to our programs in Africa. Even a small donation has a large impact, especially since the dollar buys quite a lot in most African countries. Every day, we strive to accomplish what our donors have entrusted us to achieve – visible and valuable progress in the quality of life for African people in need.

Funding Needs

KENYA

Bread and Water for Africa® has supported Phyllis Keino’s projects in Kenya for years. Bread and Water for Africa® has funded Lewa Children’s Home which houses 93 children and sponsors 197 additional children, Kipkeino Primary School with over 228 students, and Baraka Farm which produces food for both institutions.
The next step for the Lewa project is the construction of a new high school. The children of Lewa Children’s Home will attend the school in addition to other children from the community. We need funding for the construction of 6 classrooms, offices, two labs, and washrooms to continue to serve the community.

The lack of secondary schools in Kenya is so severe that 700,000 children do not have a school to go to. The aim for this high school is to take in 160 students in the first 4 years and then expand to 320 students. The school will also need dormitories, computers, a dining hall and kitchen equipment to reach its full potential as a secondary school.
