Impact Statement
In 2011...
- Trained 58 volunteers to participate in RiverWatch who logged hundreds of volunteer hours working to correct local water quality issues;
- Created a new community of environmental stewards, with people from a variety of backgrounds with the knowledge, confidence, and tools required to make a difference in the health of waterways in their own community;
- Began training and installing raingardens with volunteers; evaluating other possible sites for installation in 2012; and
- Provided community members with meaningful opportunities to increase and expand their knowledge of water related issues, resulting in a better public understanding of the need for clean water, as well as an increased number of knowledgeable citizens taking personal responsibility for the protection of our local water resources.
Through our RiverKids program, we:
- Connected deeply with 480 students, exposing them to outdoor appreciation, ethics, and river ecosystem concepts for the first time, as part of our Outdoor Initiative;
- Supported conventional science and environmental education for thousands of students in North Carolina schools; and
- Piloted a collaborative environmental education program model where teachers work with local organizations to develop student-directed service learning initiatives that made real and positive change for water quality issues in the Neuse River basin.
Our Riverkeepers:
- Enforced the Clean Water Act through monitoring, reporting, and working to correct water pollution;
- Monitored and responded to citizen complaints; and
- Advocated for better laws and policies to protect safe, clean water for all the people in the Neuse River Basin.

Program Description:
RiverWatch is a basin-wide, environmental "neighborhood watch" program designed to help citizens understand the importance of watching over their local waterways and to teach them how to take action to protect them.
This program is for anyone who spends time outside and wants to learn how they can decrease their impact on local rivers and streams, as well as learn how to recognize and correct pollution and other threats to water quality. Once trained, volunteers "watch" their local waterways which can be as simple as keeping their eyes open while their walk on a greenway or as focused as taking a boat out to investigate a known problem.
Regardless of what activity a volunteer prefers, RiverWatch provides a toolbox of knowledge and skills for protecting our local waters in the way that best fits their particular set of skills and resources.

Program Description:
The Neuse River receives a lot of trash and other debris from our urban areas throughout the year. This event helps beautify the places we exercise and play, as well as reminds us all of the valuable resource we have in our backyard.
In 2011, over 325 volunteers worked together to help clean the Neuse River basin, including over 50 miles of river and a tributary - Crabtree Creek - in Wake and Johnston Counties, North Carolina. Together, they dragged, picked, and paddled 13,425 lbs or trash and recycling away from our vital waterways. We can't wait to do it again next year!
