Impact Statement
Like air, most of us living in developed countries take the availability of clean water for granted. However, for more than 1 billion others, safe, clean water is a luxury not yet experienced. In fact, for far too many people, accessible water is more likely to cause serious illness - and even death - than to sustain life. Over 3.5 million people die each year of waterborne illness.Three million are children and most are in developing nations. World Water Relief is dedicated to combating this appalling crisis. Our approach includes selecting the right water purification technology for the need at hand, sanitation practices, extensive local training on the maintenance of the system and appropriate management, ongoing follow up on system performance, and hygiene education for children and adults on preventing the spread of waterborne disease.

CEO/Executive Director Statement:
World Water Relief believes in the philosophy of quality versus quantity. There is a lot of need in this world and especially for safe drinking water. There are also a lot of NGOs who are doing their best to meet these needs. In the short time that we have been developing our water and sanitation projects and implementing them, we have seen many good intentioned projects that have fallen in disrepair or mismanagement. It saddens us to see this because we know that time and money was behind these efforts.World Water Relief has settled in on the island of Hispaniola concentrating our efforts in the Dominican Republic and Haiti because there is enough work there to keep us going for many years. This island is so close to the United States yet the poverty and needs are so great. You can come up with many reasons why this is the case, and you may even argue that the needs are too great for any realistic results but we at World Water Relief have seen many positive steps toward making a true difference in the lives of the young people in this area.We believe that every life deserves a chance and certainly the right to drink clean water and live a healthier life because of it.Our small team is concentrating on WASH in Schools projects, and we have lots of schools ready for their chance to offer clean water to their students without them paying for that right and a place to wash their hands and learn more about hygiene and its relationship to better health. This is what we are all about. Please watch our video at http://vimeo.com/16661397 to learn more about World Water Relief and our WASH in Schools projects.

Program Description:
World Water Relief has been working in the central plateau
of Haiti since July 2009, completing a clean water project in the rural town of
Mirebalais. When the earthquake hit in January 2010, we were prepared to
help.With strong in-country
contacts, prior experience and emergency-designed, portable filtration
equipment, we were able to mobilize a strong and rapid response to the
disaster.As conditions stabilized
and the situation turned from emergency to rebuilding, World Water Relief
returned to the central plateau to concentrate on what it does best - long
term, sustainable development.
We partnered with USAID and the Mayor of Mirebalais to plan
and coordinate a clean water program for the area.A strategic plan was then laid-out to bring water filtration
projects to three large schools in the town of Mirebalais.Children in these schools currently
drink highly-contaminated water and have sanitation facilities in unusable
conditions.The most important
aspect of our clean water school project is our hygiene education course that
provides students with the knowledge, skills and motivation to improve their
health.With these abilities in
hand, students then become agents of change in their community...sparking the
beginning of real, generational change. Our goal is to target 10 schools in the central plateau region of Haiti. Each WASH in Schools project requires $20,000 in funding, which benefits an average of 2,500 students. If we reach our goal for 2011, approximately 25,000 students will have clean drinking water, adequate sanitation facilities, a hygiene education curriculum, and access to a youth hygiene club. All projects are led by local Haitians supported by World Water Relief.

Funding Needs
WWR proposes a project to be completed in the Central Plateau.Over the past 4 months, WWR developed a regional database of schools in the Central Plateau which are in need of WASH facilities and programs. This database provides information on population, administration, location and an in-depth water and sanitation evaluation of each school.WWR met with the school administrators in November 2010 to create plans for a WASH program in 2011. A WASH project involves the installation of a ultraviolet water purification system, an electric pump, two 800-gallon storage tanks, five taps for drinking water and five hand washing stations with liquid soap. The students will also engage in classroom participative-learning on hygiene, health, and clean water along with a Saturday Hygiene Club incorporating a student tree planting project, hygiene and health information, art, and music. WWR believes it is crucial to engage and inspire the students in exciting educational environments.
Volunteer Needs
Church groups and other community or civic groups are invited to participate in a WASH project. If interested, contact the Program Director for more information including dates, cost of the trip, and responsibilities.
Request for In-Kind Contributions
The Saturday Hygiene Club is in need of art supplies. Please keep in mind that financial donations allow us to purchase these materials in the country to avoid shipping and customs charges. However, we welcome the opportunity to work with groups who would like to collect items needed for the students. Please contact the Program Director.
