Impact Statement

Accomplishments from 2010: 1) major renovations on campus, including re-roofing, campus aesthetics (making this a true home for the children rather than an institution); 2) major re-organization of our residential group care services aimed to maximize supervisory support for child care staff and increase therapeutic environment for our staff; 3) increase liscensed capacity to serve more children and youth in residential group care; 4) increase staffing of chapel program to better fulfill spiritual needs of our residents; 5) have Chaplain actively contribute to the treatment planning of our children and youth
 
Goals for 2011: 1) Serving more children and families in more places and in more ways; 2) Serving the spiritual needs of our children; 3 Serving children into adulthood; enhancing living independent living programs; 4) Serving young children; early childhood education for infants and preschoolers; 5) Serving at-risk communities through local churches

Chief Executive Profile:

Mike Galloway was appointed President / CEO of the Florida United Methodist Children's Home effective July 31, 2006. He previously served as President & CEO of the United Methodist Children’s Home of Alabama and West Florida. Mike is a professional social worker with a BA and a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Alabama. He has also completed extensive post-graduate training in management and leadership, including an executive leadership program at Harvard University and is a graduate of the Center for Faith Based Leadership.

Mike has 40+ years of professional social work and human services management experience. He has previously served as Executive Director of several public and private child and family services organizations including the Alabama Alliance for the Mentally Ill. He served as Management and Program Consultant and on the Boards of numerous non-profit organizations. Mike has conducted professional development seminars for Dale Carnegie Training, specializing in leadership, team building and executive development and has taught at three colleges and universities.

Mike has received numerous awards, including Jaycees Young Religious Leader, Golden Eagle Award from the Alabama Senior Citizens Hall of Fame, the Commissioner’s Merit Award from the Alabama Department of Human Resources, and is a graduate of Leadership Selma.

Mike is an active member of the United Methodist Association and a Certified Peer Reviewer with the UMA’s EAGLE Accreditation Commission. He is a member of the UMA Board of Directors and chairs the Board Committee on Membership. Mike is also an active member of the Florida Coalition for Children, a member of the Board of Directors and is co-chair of their Governance and Leadership Committee.

He is an active United Methodist, a popular speaker and Bible teacher. He and his wife Myra have two daughters and eight grandchildren.

The Florida United Methodist Children's Home was founded in 1908 as an orphanage and has developed into one of the premiere child and family service agencies in the United States. It is accredited through the Council on Accreditation and EAGLE, the highest accreditation awarded by United Methodists for its agencies.

Program Description:

The campus currently provides a variety of holistic services to a diverse group of children ranging from ages 6-17 in fifteen cottage settings. We utilize a house parent model in the residential group setting. The residents and house parents share meals together which are prepared in the cottage, and are enjoyed in a family- style setting. A qualified dietician prepares the meal plans and the house parents pick up the groceries from our commissary, which is located on campus. The campus programs within residential care include: admissions, education, recreation, clinical services, and health services. Two of the thirteen cottages provide emergency crisis intervention/stabilization and specialized therapeutic group care services.

Two more cottages are built, allowing up to serve another 18-20 children

Program Description:

The purpose of the Florida United Methodist Children’s Home Youth Independent Living Services is to provide to residents and foster care youth comprehensive life support services in an environment that imparts knowledge, experience, and assistance designed to teach residents the necessary skills to become responsible and self-reliant as they transition into adulthood.  Services include the coordination of case management, therapy, life skills training, emotional development, career development, and a variety of resources to meet each youth’s physical, spiritual, social, and emotional growth.

80% of Young Adults who have gone through the Independent Living Program go on to lead successful adult lives.

Program Description:

Open Hearts Family Services is a ministry of the Florida United Methodist Children’s Home (FUMCH). It is the intent of FUMCH to assure that Florida children have the opportunity to reach their God-given potential. There are children and families in Florida for whom services are not readily accessible. The Children’s Home ability to serve these children is best met through established satellite service locations in underserved communities. The nature and types of services offered are needs-based and within the mission of the Children’s Home.

Open Hearts Family Services have been established in Orlando, Tampa, Volusia East, and Volusia West.

Program Description:

It was one of the pioneer day care/early childhood educational programs in the county. It has licensed capacity of 96 children. Children who are age six weeks to 5 years are cared for on a full-day or part-day basis.  We continue to strive to achieve the highest standards of practice and currently hold two accreditations; COA (Council On Accreditation), APPLE (Accredited Professional Preschool Learning Environments) and Gold Seal the highest recognition from the Florida Department of Children and Families. 

For many children the Florida United Methodist Children's Home’s Childcare Center, In As Much, will be their first of many steps on the road toward independence, their first experience with the world outside their home and family. This first step is very exciting, and a time of transition for children and parents alike. At the Florida United Methodist Children's Home’s Child Care Center we help encourage each child’s natural tendency toward growth, while at the same time, understanding their need for safety and security.

Program: Teen Mother/Baby Program

Program Description:

The Teen Mother/Baby Program at FUMCH is a program serving pregnant teens from a holistic standpoint that will help them to become full contributors to their children, themselves and to the surrounding community.

The teens will learn the basics of parenting, nurturing, bonding, and general care as well as to help them develop coping skills for the inevitable challenges of everyday life.

The program will use a house mother model, have a fenced play area, and provide on-site day care facilities once the teen mothers return to school.

Spiritual Life Endowment: An Endowment to keep our spiritual programs intact and growing to help children and youth discover their God-given potential. Goal = $1 Million
 
Campus Lighting: The lighting on campus is over 50 years old, and needs to be updated to ensure the saftey of the children and staff on campus. Goal = $1 Million
 
Strengthening Volunteer Network: Reaching out to churches throughout the state, both through our Local Church Representative program and by staff visiting churches in person, to encourage people to volunteer their time to the Children's Home -- both at their churches and at the Home itself.
