Program Description:
Early Intervention services are provided to children from birth through Kindergarten. Services are provided to the child and family in the child’s home, day care, school, or neighborhood setting. Learning is structured to maximize the visual and developmental progress of each child. Early Intervention services are critical in preventing unnecessary developmental delays due to vision impairment. Children and families served in the Early Intervention program are empowered to participate in and benefit from activities in the home, community, and school setting.

Access Technology: Individuals who complete access technology are able to use the computer and other devices to perform important daily living tasks such as paying bills, shopping, maintaining checking, savings, and investment accounts, and communicating with friends and family. The skills learned from access technology training give graduates an edge in the current competitive job market.
Independent Living Skills: Graduates of Independent Living Skills training are able to live independently and safely and have less need to rely on family and friends for daily living needs. Independent Living Skills training prevents premature placement into assisted living and nursing homes. Working-age adults who complete Independent Living Skills training are able to return to gainful employment, and often discontinue disability benefits.
Orientation and Mobility: Orientation and Mobility training is instrumental in preventing falls and unnecessary isolation.
Hospitality Training: Upon graduation intensive job placement and job coaching services are provided to ensure the participant’s transition into competitive employment in the hospitality industry. Hospitality training graduates will have learned strong skills that help to make them attractive candidates to local employers in the current competitive job market.

Program Description:
School Age Children’s Services provide instruction to children, in grades Kindergarten through seventh grade, who have a visual impairment. Group instruction is provide once per week. Activities help children develop self-awareness, self-advocacy, and learn daily living skills that foster personal independence. School Age Children’s Services promote the development of daily living skills and behaviors needed to succeed in the home and school setting. Students also participate in recreation and leisure activities, and community service projects.

Transition for Teens Program

Program Description:
Transition services are provided to student’s ages 14 through 21 that are currently being served by the school system under an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Group sessions occur twice per month and individualized instruction is available to students throughout the week. Transition services provide participants with the opportunity to develop positive self-esteem, independence, and employability skills. Skill areas addressed include: communication, computer technology, cooking, future planning, learning strategies, use of remaining vision, orientation and mobility, personal management, problem solving, social skills, sports and leisure, and work exploration. The Transition program provides students with skills to facilitate successful transition from high school to post-secondary education, such as college, vocational school, and employment. Transition services promote school advancement and help teens achieve future self-sufficiency.

Program Description:
Access Technology
training enables individuals to use technology in the home, school, and
workplace. Instruction offered includes: typing, access software, Windowsnavigation, word processing, internet, spreadsheets, and use of devices such asnote takers, printers, Braille embossers, and scanners.
Independent Living Skills
training provides individuals with improved ability to perform activities of daily living with adaptations for vision impairment. Participants receive
adjustment to blindness counseling and self-advocacy skills that empower them to interact more effectively with family, friends, employers, and the
community.
Orientation and Mobility
training provides individuals with improved ability to travel safely and
independently in their environment. Training is provided in the home,
community, educational setting, or work place.
Rehabilitation Engineering
includes the recommendation, installation, modification, or customization of access technology in the home or work place. Services include: personal computer set-up in the home or work place, customization of computer access software, and troubleshooting of accessible computer systems. Rehabilitation engineering services enable a technology end-user to perform computer operations in the home and work place.
Supported Employment
services are available to adults who are visually impaired and have other
significant disabilities that result in the individual having difficulty
gaining or maintaining employment. Individualized intensive job placement and job coaching services are provided.
Hospitality Training
is provided to adults who seek careers in the
hospitality service industry. Lighthouse Central Florida and the National
Statler Center for Careers in Hospitality Service, based out of Buffalo, N.Y., have partnered to provide training in communications skills, customer service skills, math skills, and use of hotel software programs most commonly used in the work place.
