Why does this matter? Without clarity around their responsibilities and expectations, board members are not positioned to succeed. They may find themselves challenged to fulfill their governance responsibilities or frustrated by the expectations that the organization has set for them. BoardSource recommends that every new board member participate in a formal orientation process, and that all board members sign a pledge or agreement committing to their board service and to all of the responsibilities and expectations that come with service. Enhance the classroom experience and support academic success through measures, including: matching dollar and technology grants for teachers and schools, and early literacy programs for at-risk students.

The grants program awarded 125 classroom, school, and technology grants -- totaling more than $350,000.  Struggling readers in grades K-3 in 14 schools in Hillsborough County received more than 11,000 hours of one-on-one tutoring.  These students raised their reading levels by two grade levels and higher.

Annually the Foundation obtains over $5 million in support from the community, with $0.90 of every dollar going directly to programs.  As a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, the Foundation provides Hillsborough County Public Schools with funding that is typically more flexible than restricted tax dollars.  The funding and extra resources for the students, teachers, and schools helps to cover the gap that exists between what school budgets can cover, and what is needed to ensure the academic success of our students.
