Chief Executive

Florence Tandy

CEO/Executive Director Statement:

For the thousands of Northern Kentucky families who are struggling in this economy, the great recession is not about bank failures, debt ceilings, unemployment rates, or stock market plunges.  It is much more personal than that. The poor, the less educated, single parents, the young, and the old are the first to feel the impact in such times. More often than not, they come to Northern Kentucky Community Action Commission for help and support. In fact, services for vulnerable families have increased by 30% over the past two years. And nearly half them had never needed to ask for help before. These clients need more than concrete services – financial assistance, early childhood education, affordable housing, job training – though that is certainly important. They also need support and understanding as they face their very personal crisis situations. At Northern Kentucky Community Action Commission, we are proud to provide both.

This is our community too, and we are all in this world and this work
together. Each day we try to show that COMMUNITY really is our
middle name as we live out our mission. Besides the direct assistance we offer to some 12,000 families annually, we provide economic benefits as an employer, small business, and community citizen. Our 140 employees earn some $4.3 million in salaries, and another $1.6 million in fringe benefits, contributing to the local economy. NKCAC rents space, maintains our propoerty, and purchases materials with other small and large businesses, helping make our local economy stronger. In fact in 2011, we were recognized by the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce for our impact on the economy. In short, it takes us all - nonprofits, government, businesses - to create a vibrant community. At NKCAC we are making sure that all its residents have the opportunity to contribute and benefit.

Funding Needs

NKCAC relies on donations from the community for many of our services.  For most of our federal funding, a match of 25% or more is required. This match is contributed by individuals, foundations, corporations, and other community groups.  Most often donations are used for client assistance, program supplies, child care scholarships, home repair, staff and client development activities, and facility improvements.

Volunteer Needs

Volunteers are needed in each of our centers and locations for direct client work, for administrative/clerical work, and special projects.

Request for In-Kind Contributions

We rely on in-kind donations to support our mission.  Typical in-kind donations include food for our six food pantries; classroom supplies for our seven Head Start Centers; Christmas gifts for families and children; gift cards for client incentives; meals for our YouthBuild participants; event tickets for various participant groups; door prizes for staff training events.
