Mission Statement

EDGE OUTREACH is a dynamic non-profit corporation whose mission is to provide safe and reliable water to improve the health and welfare of communities in developing countries. We care deeply about the disease and death caused by the shortage of clean water, and we devote our efforts to helping relieve that shortage, liter by liter, one community at a time. EDGE promotes a unique approach to generating clean and sustainable supplies of clean water for small communities. The tools and training we have developed offer dramatic, life-saving improvements under difficult circumstances, whether working in communities struggling to satisfy their day-to-day needs or working in the context of acute disaster-relief situations.

Impact Statement

The need for sustainable water solutions is critical for nearly a billion people struggling to live without access to clean water. Natural disasters further increase the need for small, powerful and highly efficient water treatment equipment. By virtue of our knowledge of appropriate water technology, our goal is to be a leader in addressing the global problem of sickness and death due to waterborne disease.

Talented at recruiting, train- ing, and motivating volunteers from many cultures to accomplish specific goals – primar- ily to improve access to safe drinking water in developing countries. The result? Ordinary people trained to extraordinary things.

Nurtured this Kentucky non-profit organization since its inception in 1995, refocusing its mission through phases that have included:

sending scores of students on short-term missions to Costa Rica, Brazil, Kenya
developing a free optical screening and vision program that has provided glasses to many thousands of Romanians
working with the Louisville Catholic diocese to establish an urban Mission House residence and training center for youth
integrating efficient and sustainable technologies for water, sanitation and health

EDGE OUTREACH EQUIPS HAITIANS TO PROVIDE SAFE WATER
AS CHOLERA OUTBREAK SPREADS

October 29, 2010

Louisville, Kentucky: As part of its ongoing water relief efforts, EDGE OUTREACH responded to the January earthquake in Haiti and trained over 20 Haitians to install and operate water purification systems. As predicted, the infectious disease emergency has arrived in Haiti. The Haitian Water Specialists EDGE trained in January are prepared with the skills needed to provide immediate clean water relief. EDGE is sending needed equipment, tools, and water purifiers.

Preventing the spread of cholera requires the provision of clean, safe water to as many people as possible, and the implementation of effective health and hygiene practices. Former Kentucky State Commissioner of Health Dr. David Allen, M.D. states that the recent cholera outbreak in Haiti is the result of the following circumstances:

1. Infected individuals who have contaminated the food and water supplies can and will continue to contaminate these resources; and
2. The supply system for water in many areas is totally unprotected from this kind of bacterial contamination.

According to Dr. Allen, “The need to safeguard as many water supplies as possible to prevent further outbreaks is absolutely paramount, because there can be a resurgence of the epidemic at any point that an infectious carrier contaminates any one of these unprotected water supplies."

Five EDGE Haitian Water Specialists based in Port au Prince will work with strategically located partners to identify areas of need and execute a plan of action that involves the following:

1. Installing water purification systems in selected areas. This includes the equipment necessary to pump water from a source and filter it before the chlorination process, which kills all waterborne bacteria, including Vibrio cholerae. Each system can produce 37,854 liters of clean water per day.
2. Teaching sustainable health and hygiene practices to people at water sites.

This will cover the tools and materials to install water purification systems in affected areas. These systems will be in use long after our cholera relief efforts have ended.
