Program: Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, Inc.

Budget:
$819,000
Category:
Human Services
Population Served:
Military/Veterans
Adults

Program Description:

Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing (PHWFF) provides recreational and non-traditional physical therapy opportunities to injured military service personnel and disabled veterans. The program objectives include teaching participants the basics of fly fishing, fly tying classes, fly casting, rod building and in some areas, boat building, along with local outings and national fly fishing trips. Members of Trout Unlimited chapters, Federation of Fly Fishers clubs and independent fly fishing groups volunteer their time and talents to help PHWFF make a difference in the lives of men and women who served or are currently serving in the Armed Forces of United States.

Program Long-Term Success:

PHWFF has experienced sustained growth in the number of programs that have become operational since the organization was formed in 2005, as well as in the increased number of veterans and active military participants. In the first five years, nearly 100 programs have been formed and the potential for continued growth is significant at Wounded Warrior Transition Units and at U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs facilities that have not been introduced to PHWFF. Thousands of veterans and active military service personnel who have participated in PHWFF programs since its inception have overcome challenges that resulted from their new life situation and many have successfully reintegrated into their community. Results of an individual’s participation vary by the nature of the injury, yet most participants claim improved fine motor skills and balance, renewed self-esteem, heightened self confidence, newfound focus and concentration, more positive attitude and recovered social skills.

Program Short-Term Success:

PHWFF has created working partnerships with Department of Defense (DoD) facilities and the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) to provide fly fishing instruction and referrals to introduce prospective program-eligible participants. PHWFF has also developed a mutually beneficial collaboration with established fly fishing organizations, such as Trout Unlimited (TU) and the Federation of Fly Fishers (FFF) to recruit volunteers who are knowledgeable and willing to share their time and talents with disabled veterans and injured service men and women. PHWFF raises funds to purchase fly tying equipment and materials, rod building supplies, fly fishing equipment (rods and reels, waders, etc.) and provides fly fishing trips to pristine trout streams for veterans and soldiers at no cost to the participants. PHWFF is grateful for the generous financial support and encouragement it receives from individual donors, corporate contributions and foundation grants, and receives no funding from any government agency.

Program Success Monitored by:

The Board of Trustees bears the primary responsibility for ensuring that PHWFF fulfills its obligations to the veterans and service men and women, its donors, volunteers, the public at large and the law. The board provides oversight to ensure that its financial, human and materials resources are used appropriately to further the organization’s mission and establishes high standards of accountability and transparency. The board also sets the vision and mission for the organization and determines the broad policies and strategic direction that enables the organization to fulfill its charitable purpose

Program Success Examples:

Sustained growth in the total programs and number of veterans served is a reliable indicator that PHWFF is responsive to the needs and ever increasing number of injured servicemen and disabled veterans. PHWFF programs are available in 38 states, the District of Columbia and Canada. In 2010, over 2,000 veterans and active military service personnel participated in PHWFF programs. PHWFF has been recognized by FOX News, CNN, ESPN, Fly Rod Chronicles, numerous local television and cable channels, the print and electronic media, magazines of major Veteran’s Service Organizations, government agencies and private organizations for its work with disabled veterans and injured military personnel. At Department of Veterans Affairs and military facilities, PHWFF is a respected organization for providing a needed service on a regular basis. PHWFF’s president, Ed Nicholson, Captain, U.S. Navy (retired) has been recognized and honored for his vision, dedication and work in the rehabilitation of America’s disabled veterans and wounded warriors.

Funding Needs

PHWFF needs funding to purchase fly tying vises and other fly tying equipment and supplies as well as to buy fly rods and reels.  For rod building, rod blanks are needed.  Wounded warriors and disabled veterans who are able to travel may also be nominated and selected go on fly fishing outings - either locally, throughout the United States or on International trips to Canada, the United Kingdom and elsewhere.  Funding for these activities ranges from under $100 to pay for gasoline and meals to thousands of dollars to cover multiple day lodging, meals, air and ground transportation and professional guides.

Volunteer Needs

PHWFF seeks individuals to teach fly tying, fly casting, and rod building.  Individuals are also needed to provide administrative and logistical support, to include fundraising and public relations.

Request for In-Kind Contributions

In-Kind donations range from fly rods and reels, waders, outdoor clothing, fly tying materials, waiver of professional guide fees, waiver of fishing license fees, comp'ed lodging, boat rides, drift boats, air travel, meals, fly casting and fly tying lessons from certified professionals, flies, waived fishing fees, and more.

PHWFF Chairman Wins L.L. Bean Award

September 01, 2011

Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, Inc. (PHWFF) is pleased to announce that Douglas Dear was named a winner of the prestigious L.L. Bean Outdoor Heroes Award.  Mr. Dear, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of PHWFF, won this distinction by gaining a majority of popular votes through online voting during July.

“I am humbled to have received such significant support from so many individuals,” stated Dear¸ ”and this award gives me the opportunity to share the exemplary programs with individuals who may not have heard about Project Healing Waters before.  In addition to the $5,000 donation that will be made by L.L. Bean to PHWFF, and the $500 L.L. Bean gift card I have passed along to PHWFF, the disabled veterans and wounded warriors are the real winners.”

Douglas Dear was recognized for his passionate leadership and tireless efforts which brought about significant and sustained program growth to PHWFF.  From the program’s inception at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. to more than 100 programs in 2011, PHWFF volunteers have assisted disabled veterans and recovering soldiers by exposing them to the therapeutic benefits of fly fishing.   The number of PHWFF volunteers and participants has increased every year, and, in 2010, some 3,000 disabled veterans and recovering military service members were involved in regularly scheduled classes and fishing outings offered by PHWFF.  Through fly fishing instruction, fly tying classes, fly casting lessons, rod building and fly fishing outings, participants learn new skills that help them enjoy the healing properties of the outdoors and lessen the symptoms of their disabilities.

Dear’s advocacy of fly fishing and his responsible stewardship of fly fishing waters have been instrumental to the success of the PHWFF program as well as other nonprofit organizations.  He maintains over a mile of private water on the Rose River, in addition to a trout pond and two bass ponds at his Rose River Farm near Syria, Virginia.  He hosts Casting for Recovery retreats and Trout Unlimited youth programs in addition to many Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing events.  Douglas has dedicated time, effort and considerable personal resources to conservation initiatives and environmental issues.

“We are grateful to Douglas,” stated Ed Nicholson, Capt., USN (Ret.), President and CEO of Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, “not just for what he contributes to us but for others as well.  He’s very generous and committed, and others deserve to know about the wonderful things he does.  It is a fitting tribute for Douglas to be selected as the L.L. Bean Outdoor Heroes Award recipient for 2011.”

Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, Inc. is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization with over 100 programs run by volunteers in 38 states.  Funding for program expenses comes from individual and corporate donations and foundation grants.   Visit the L.L. Bean web site to learn more about the recipients of the award https://www.llbean.com/outdoorsOnline/conservationAndEnvironment/outdoorHeroes/?stop_mobi=yes&qei=&qs=3049697 .  For information about PHWFF, visit www.projecthealingwaters.org.
