Thank you for your interest in The Arc of Shelby County.  Our goal is to provide quality services to individuals with developmental disabilities as well as provide supports to their families.

Program Description:

Services provided to infants and toddlers with developmental disabilities utilizing family coach philosophies and a team approach.  Team members include the child's parents, service coordinator and consultants such as  physical therapist, speech therapist, occupational therapist, and special instructor.

Program Long-Term Success:

Through recent research, early intervention services have proven to be an effective use of funds, diminishing the need for services in K-12 educational settings and beyond.

Program Short-Term Success:

In 2008, over 160 infants and toddlers received intensive services, assisting them to achieve developmental milestones on as typical a schedule as possible to achieve to their fullest potential.  The program is designed to assist parents become their child's best teacher and advocate.

Program Success Monitored by:

Each child is evaluated upon entry to program and then also receives an exit evaluation, documenting achievement to developmental milestones.  In addition, parents complete a survey annually to indicate their level of satisfaction with program services and supports.

Program Success Examples:

In 2007, over 70% of children made significant progress in attaining new skill levels.

Program Description:

Right Jobs is a supported employment programs, facilitating regular, competitive employment in community settings. Assistance with on-site job training and long-term employment supports are provided.

Program Long-Term Success:

In the nine years of this programs existence, over 50 individuals have received significant job supports, leading to increased economic security and a greater sense of community belonging.

Program Short-Term Success:

In 2008, over 30 individuals received some service through Right Jobs:  job assessment, job development, job training and long-term supports.

Program Success Monitored by:

Success is measured by job placement and job stability.  Each job seeker receives significant supports--both pre-employment and for extended periods after job begins to ascertain job stability.

Program Success Examples:

In 2008, 8 individuals attained and retained community jobs, while another 20 individuals received long term job supports.

Program Description:

Services include resource development and coordination for immediate and long-term needs, assistance with school-related issues, transportation concerns, personal care, transition from school to work and other services necessary for individuals to live and successfully integrate into the community.

Program Long-Term Success:

Families and self-advocates are more empowered to advocate for the services and supports they need.

Program Short-Term Success:

In 2008, two community education workshops were held, focusing on guardianship issues and advocacy issues, serving over 50 individuals.  Information and referral calls increased.  Over 30 adults with developmental disabilities participated in People First.

Program Success Monitored by:

Following each workshops, an evaluation is completed by attendees in order to know if workshops met their needs.  Self advocates have the opportunity to participate in a satisfaction survey each year.

Program Success Examples:

People First of Shelby County, sponsored by The Arc of Shelby County, held a voter and candidate forum in October 2008 to educate self-advocates on their rights.  Over 80 individuals attended and indicated a higher awareness of their rights as citizens.
