Impact Statement

ABC’s  programs lead to long-term change for the childcare community. They reduce the incidence and prevalence rates of social/emotional, behavioral, and learning problems, and thus strengthen the well-being of this vulnerable community. As children cope adaptively to trauma, grief, and attachment issues, they are better able to learn and interact in a healthy way with peers, adults, and family members. This in turn leads to better performance in school and success throughout adulthood. The program helps caregivers to heal emotional wounds (from trauma to depression) in order to better serve the children as healthy caregivers with new skills as therapeutic agents. These adults become more personally successful, more nurturing with their families, and more productive members of the community. Both children and adults are better able to reach their potential. These changes positively affect the center and community environments. The natural helpers aid in sustaining these changes, remaining after ABC services are decreased to continue their teaching and ongoing supportive activities.

CEO/Executive Director Statement:

The mental health needs of at-risk preschool children, their families and teachers who face many risk factors (poverty, single-parent families, poor educational prospects, minority status and violent neighborhoods) typically go unmet. These children show signs of insecure attachment, depression, out-of-control aggressive behavior, developmental and speech delays, poor social skills, inability to self-regulate, and inability to learn. These lead to failure to learn, expulsion from school, and inability to become productive adults. ABC is able to address these  risk factors and trauma so that by the time a child enters kindergarten he/she is able to thrive. Program: Childcare Center Social Emotional Wellness program (CCSEW)

Budget:
$765,000
Category:
Health Care
Population Served:
Infants/Babies (under age 5)
Adults
Ethnic/Racial Minorities -- General

Program Description:

The Childcare Center Social Emotional Wellness program (CCSEW) provides(at no cost): play therapy for children; training for teachers,  parents and "natural helpers"; parent-child therapy, and psychotherapy for adults in subsidized childcare centers. CCSEW initially provides intensive comprehensive services (40 hours per week) -- then gradually reduces services after the community becomes healthier and better able to support the children. Services onsite at childcare centers encourage participation. CCSEW contains built-in program monitoring and evaluation using pre and post tests (measuring therapy and workshop outcomes) to insure continuing program accountability, thereby shaping the program to meet the community's needs.   This program is cost effective because of the utilization of trained master level interns and  volunteers equaling approximately $600,000 per year.

Program Long-Term Success:

We anticipate that the long term success will be  improved  social and emotional wellness of the childcare community. Our objectives include:
a) Improve children’s social and emotional wellness, along with the improved skills of teachers and parent. The children will show improved, secure attachments, initiative in problem-solving, self-control --leading to increased learning readiness, educational achievement, decreased behavioral concerns
and becoming productive adults who are socially skilled and emotionally competent.
b) Improve teachers’ mental health status and assist them in becoming “therapeutic agents” for the children in their care.
c) Improve the parents’ mental health level and parent-child relationships. Healthy well functioning parents will be more able to reach their potential as parents, in the workplace or school, and as community members
d) Improve the overall health and functioning of everyone within the child development center community, as the above goals impact the entire community. Improved health will result in better relationships, better job performance, increased learning readiness, a more positive outlook and strengthen the community’s capacity building.

Thanksgiving was a special holiday at My First Steps Westgate, due to the work and generosity of The Sagemont School’s Hispanic Honor Society, Amberwood Preschool Academy’s parents and staff and the Friends of Weston Foundation. The Friends of Weston members coordinated this event and were on hand to give a pumpkin pie to each child and teacher for them to enjoy with their holiday dinner. The parents and staff of the Amberwood Preschool Academy provided the pies. The Children of the Sagemont School’s Hispanic Honor Society made and donated gift bags that included boxed cereal, a tee shirt, a coloring book, and crayons for each child also. Everyone from My First Steps childcare center started the Thanksgiving holiday a little more thankful!

St. Mark's Quilters Provide Warmth and Comfort to Needy Children

Nine childcare centers at which ABC provides or has provided its Childcare Community Social and Emotional Wellness program have benefited from the generosity of "St. Mark's Quilters" from St. Mark's Episcopal Church in P.B. Gardens. This dedicated group  makes quilts, flannel blankets and Beanie Baby Bags, so that the children have something to snuggle with at naptime or in the quiet areas of the classroom. Many children in these childcare centers don’t have a blanket to cover with at naptime (parents and centers often can’t afford them), these quilts and flannel blankets make naptime a warmer more comfortable time!

St. Mark's Outreach Ministry has raised money to buy school clothes, shoes and socks for several families who are struggling in these difficult times.

All ‘Bout Children, Center Staff and the children and families are thankful for the work of this amazingly talented group of ladies.
