Impact Statement

The Senior Hub’s programs address hunger, nutrition, health and wellness, community connections, self-sufficiency, poverty, and access to care and support for seniors. The Senior Solutions’ Minor Home Repair program acknowledge the 46% of older adults who need help to complete minor interior or exterior home repairs. The Adult Day Service and Respite Care and In-Home Services programs respond to needs not only of older adults, but of the 58% of baby boomers who are in the workforce during the day and are frequently or sometimes burdened by caregiving for an older adult (DRCOG, 2004). A 2006 MetLife survey found that 15.9 million full-time workers were engaged in caregiving. Productivity losses from absenteeism and workday interruptions cost U.S. companies $33.6 billion in the year studied. The population is aging and the need for caregiving is growing.

According to the Census Bureau (2006), 46,104 Adams County residents are 60 years or older; of these, more than 13,500 are over the age of 75. An additional 20,793 between 55 and 59 are about to reach retirement age. In Arapahoe County, 75,092 residents are 60 or older; 23,943 are 75 or older, and 35,385 are between 55 and 59 years of age. This means that our programming must expand to meet growing demand. For example, two years ago The Senior Hub doubled the size of our Adult Day Service facility and we have added the Rural Meals on Wheels program. We have also restructured our accounting office, because the capacity of our administration must also be able to handle this growth.

Program: Respite Care & In-Home Supportive Services

Budget:
$307,630
Category:
Human Services
Population Served:
Aging/Elderly/Senior Citizens

Program Description:

The Senior Hub is the major provider of Respite Care and In-Home Services in Adams County and parts of Arapahoe County. Recently this program was expanded, and now also serves Denver, Broomfield and Jefferson counties. Respite Care services provide caregivers a break from their responsibilities by providing trained and trusted professional caregivers who are experienced in caring for older adults. In-Home Services provides professional caregivers who offer intensive personal care services and can stay with seniors for extended periods of time. Volunteer caregivers provide less intensive services, such as grocery shopping, running errands, and light housekeeping.

All professional and volunteer caregivers are carefully screened, trained, bonded and insured. The program also conducts support groups to provide primary caregivers with information, support, and access to services they may need. We have also created a Companion Care Program to help older adults care for their pets. Our volunteers bathe and walk pets, and take them to a Veterinarian

Category:
Food, Agriculture & Nutrition
Population Served:
Aging/Elderly/Senior Citizens

Program Description:

Meals on Wheels and Rural Meals on Wheels provide meals, as well as volunteers who monitor the wellness of program participants. In both programs all meals provide at least one-third of the recommended daily nutrition for older adults. Besides delivering meals, The Senior Hub is responsible for overall administration of and reporting on the program. We also conduct an initial in-home assessment with all program participants to ensure that they qualify for the program and to help them complete all the required paperwork. We repeat this assessment every six months to monitor the well-being of our clients.
