Program: Client Assistance

Budget:
$336,226
Category:
Human Services
Population Served:
Poor/Economically Disadvantaged, Indigent, General

Program Description:

Financial assistance is given to low-income Wichita County and Holliday residents who face short-term crises, for example; gasoline, prescriptions, rent, utility bills, deposits, car repair, medical supplies, dentures, hearing aids, copies of birth certificates, ID cards, and other basic needs.  Payment is made to a utility company, landlord, drugstore or other provider, not directly to the client.

Program Long-Term Success:

Interfaith Ministries has provided emergency financial assistance to Wichita Falls residents since 1982 and has grown in support from a budget of $46,000 that year to over a million dollars in 2009.  Many thousands of families have received assistance over the years.

The staff has a wealth of knowledge and experience in working with families in need, as well as knowledge of many clients’ history with the organization.  They have developed good working relationships with utility companies, landlords and apartment managers and other assistance agencies.

Program Short-Term Success:

Through September, 2009, 2,467 families were interviewed for assistance, an increase of 22% from 2008.  Five hundred eight families received food assistance, an increase of 11% from 2008.1,442 clients received assistance, an increase of 55% from 2008.

Program Success Monitored by:

When IMI can help someone stay in their home by paying a bill or providing food, even for an extra month, it can ease the crisis until other options are available.  In many cases the financial crunch is temporary, and short-term assistance is all that’s needed.  In situations where the living conditions must change, this temporary assistance can keep the household intact until other arrangements can be made.

Program Success Examples:

Interfaith Ministries combines resources with other local agencies such as Adult Protective Services to provide dentures, hearing aids and medical needs; works with utility providers to keep services connected; with landlords to keep families from being evicted.  Interfaith provides local bus passes, gasoline and ID cards to help people find jobs.  Food from the pantry helps clients stretch their dollars to pay for bills.

Program: Rx Project

Budget:
$24,950
Category:
Human Services
Population Served:
Poor/Economically Disadvantaged, Indigent, General

Program Description:

Program provides up to $175 per month to pay for maintenance prescriptions for low-income individuals with chronic illnesses.  Participants telephone when they need to refill prescriptions.  Volunteers take the information and send to local pharmacies, where Rx can be picked up or delivered.  The pharmacies bill Interfaith Ministries monthly.

Funding Needs

The budget for 2011 is $400,000 to cover operations and expenditures for client assistance and the Rx Project. Funding sources include supporting member congregations, individuals, businesses, civic groups and foundations.

Volunteer Needs

Volunteers are scheduled on a monthly calendar, in four areas; office, intake, pantry and prescription. Shifts are two hours each, morning or afternoon, and volunteers may work from once a month to every week, depending on their preference and availability. In addition to the positions at the Center, bilingual volunteers provide interpreting services out in the community for non-English speakers.

Request for In-Kind Contributions

Interfaith’s food pantry depends on contributions from the community of nonperishable food items, as well as frozen and refrigerated foods, cleaning supplies, paper products and hygiene items. Office supplies such as copy paper, printer ink, labels, and other consumables are always needed.
