Population Served:
Poor/Economically Disadvantaged, Indigent, General

Program Description:

Food Assistance and Social Services are often the first points of contact with our Center.  Through our food pantries and other emergency services, we provide food, financial and other basic assistance, so that families can begin to use our independence-enhancing programs.

Food Pantry clients are referred to Social Services where professional case managers identify the barriers clients face and develop individualized plans to overcome specific challenges. While providing additional basic services (such as securing government benefits), case managers assess client needs and match them with programs offered by the Center or one of our many collaborative partners.

Program Description:

Education is fundamental to overcoming poverty, and the Wilkinson Center’s educational programs provide a path to self-reliance and financial independence.

PROGRAM MISSION: To assist those with the desire to become self-sufficient by providing the tools and skills necessary to set goals and achieve sustainable economic independence.

How is our program different from other adult education programs?

At the Wilkinson Center, our clients choose from an array of work and life skill classes tailored to meet adults’ immediate and long-term needs. Through Case Management planning, adults leverage our services to gain skills that give them the ability to become financially independent and break the cycle of poverty. Currently, more than 315 adults a month are enrolled in our programs which include CareerWorks, Financial Literacy, General Educational Development (GED), English as a Second Language (ESL), and Computer Literacy.

Program: Child Education (CLIMB)

Budget:
--
Category:
Population Served:
Children Only (5 - 14 years)
Poor/Economically Disadvantaged, Indigent, General

Program Description:

CLIMB stands for Changing Lives, Improving Minds & Bodies, and CLIMB UP! for Unlimited Potential. Students receive tutoring and homework support, as well as the opportunity to participate in cultural and recreational activities. CLIMB provides a safe and secure environment where students are encouraged to succeed.  Currently, the program is offered at eight Dallas-area locations and serves more than 900 students.

PROGRAM MISSION: To provide a safe environment after school where children can experience personal growth through an integrated curriculum that develops and strengthens the educational, emotional, and physical aspects of a child’s life.

How does CLIMB differ from other after-school programs?

CLIMB is an after-school and summer program for at-risk children ages 5-14 and one of the few FREE year-round programs in the city of Dallas. The curriculum and activities used in CLIMB expose students to the arts, technology, and values which foster motivation to succeed in all aspects of life. Children are introduced to theater, art, dance, music, sports and cultural field trips.

Wilkinson Center works to overcome the challenges that hinder students’ academic and social development.  We strive to have close relationships with our kids, their parents, and Dallas Independent School District teachers.
