Impact Statement

Sanma is addressing some of the most pressing issues of south Asia, at a grass-root level. Left unaddressed, these issues hurt not only the direct victims, but also those who ignored them also. Since 1989, Sanma’s efforts have helped heal the scars poverty and ignorance placed on the people of rural south Asia.

Sanma builds up people through community development, by establishing Community Education Centers across the most remote, or neglected villages of India where a local person is trained and equipped to build up his/her villagers by enhancing literacy, health, and agriculture.

Currently Sanma has established 43 Community education centers that serve 51 villages. As a result, their children are no longer forced into child labor, their micro-farmers are utilizing their agriculture resources, they enjoy having access to fresh water sources, and they have learned to prevent diseases.

In addition, Sanma has established one Public School that serves 6 townships.

Through these efforts, a combined total of 50,000 people enjoy a changed life, for the better.

CEO/Executive Director Statement:

Sanma’s programs are designed based on a simple, yet solid belief that it is possible to help a person reach his/her full potential. We believe so because, we have come to learn that the vast majority of human rights violations occurred not necessarily due to the overwhelming power of those who violate the defenseless, but due to the overwhelming weakness of the victim. Child laborers are great examples. Their childhood is stolen. However, it is not the employer to blame first, but the poverty of his/her home, and the ignorance of his parents. Illiteracy has deprived people their basic rights than any other force.

At Sanma we are dedicated to bring hope to the defenseless children and micro-farmers through enhancing literacy, health, and agriculture. Doing so, we can help the same people who are now considered to be a liability, to become answers to some of the biggest threats on humanity! By providing literacy for the child laborers, we can build up contributing citizens. Providing people health literacy and educating people to prevent diseases will build up a better workforce. By enhancing the capacity of micro-farmers we can help farmers produce enough food for the world. It calls for a community based approach, where the end user is equipped with information and tools to thrive. And that is what Sanma’s Community Education Centers are all about.

Program: Read India, Healthy Village, Farm India, Fresh Water

Budget:
$297,000
Category:
Community Development
Population Served:
General Public/Unspecified

Program Description:

Read India: Program teaches child laborers and illiterate adults to read and write. A six-month course allows each student to learn to read and write in their own language.

Healthy Village: The program provides health literacy, educating people how to prevent diseases, and to use home remedies safely. Children and families in 43 villages of India have been educated ways to prevent diarrhea, malaria, and helminthes.

Farm India: Program enhances agriculture by helping micro-farmers to restart farming and to utilize their full capacity to produce food and other agriculture products.

Fresh Water: The program builds deep-water-wells, and educates people ways to preserve water, and to keep water sources safe.

Program Long-Term Success:

The long term success of Sanma’s programs is the sustainable development they bring to people. Read India provides people the ability to read and write, which allow them to get better jobs and income sources. The Healthy Village program supplies people information that saves lives. Farm India agriculture development program educates micro-farmers ways to enhance crops, animal health, and presents better methods of storage and processing of agriculture products.

Program Short-Term Success:

Short term success of the program is the participation of the beneficiaries which can be attributed to Sanma’s field staff who have been capable of communicating the short, as well as long term benefits of the program to the villagers. Even within five years since the inception of Community Education Centers, villagers experienced up to 95% reduction in infant deaths, and up to 100% more productivity of agriculture.

Program Success Monitored by:

Sanma’s programs are monitored by well trained field staff members, who are also part of the community they help develop. Rather than manage or supervise people, Sanma motivates people to perform at their par.

Program Success Examples:

In 2002, Sanma introduced Healthy Village program in 22 villages where infant deaths to diarrhea was common. In 2005, out of these 22 villages, 17 enjoyed a zero infant death to diarrhea. This was achieved without employing any medical professional. The villagers were educated by people who were selected from their own neighborhoods, and were trained by Sanma to provide their communities information that saves lives.
