Since Oct 2003

Profile:

At the Partnership Ms. Feist has focused on bringing media attention to the Fight BAC!® consumer safe food handling messages, and on organizational development and effectiveness. She has guided creation of the Partnership’s Corporate Advisory Committee and the development, testing and launch of the Be Food Safe retail platform.  In the summer of 2009 she led the development of a new consumer resource at holidayfoodsafety.org.   Ms. Feist has appeared on NBC’s Today Show on the topic of safe food handling for consumers. Prior to joining PFSE, Ms. Feist was with the Pew Charitable Trusts, a private philanthropic foundation based in Philadelphia, PA where her work included an effort to assess and strengthen the policy development capacity of state-based organizations.   Ms. Feist has worked for two U.S Senators focusing on appropriations and domestic policy.  She served as Director of Government Liaison for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts under Chairman James D. Wolfensohn.

Leadership Statement:

The national non-profit Partnership for Food Safety Education is the only public-private collaborative that focuses exclusively on the prevention of foodborne illness at the point of consumer handling and preparation in the home. We deliver trusted, science-based behavioral health messaging and a network of resources that support consumers in their efforts to reduce the risk of foodborne illness.   Educating consumers about food safety is NOT the entire solution to eliminating illness.  But it is a critical aspect of prevention that cannot be ignored.  We believe that the Fight BAC!® campaign’s basic preventive practices of clean, separate, cook and chill should be common knowledge for all Americans, including kids.

Program: Ending Foodborne Illness

Budget:
--
Category:
Population Served:

Program Description:

According to the CDC foodborne infections will cause 48 million illnesses, 128,000 hospitalizations and 3,000 deaths this year.  We know that very young children are the most vulnerable population when it comes to serious foodborne illness that leads to hospitalization.  Children under 9 account for 56% of hospitalizations from two common foodborne infections - salmonellosis and campylobacteriosis.   The Partnership for Food Safety Education delivers trusted, science-based behavioral health messaging and a network of resources that support consumers in their efforts to reduce risk of foodborne illness.     Nationally, more than 13,000 public health educators, food industry members, cooperative extensions, teachers, dietitians, and consumers use Fight BAC!® materials to teach others about the importance of safe food handling to good health.

Program Long-Term Success:

The Partnership is the catalyst for national collaboration in food safety education and a leader in developing ways to track outcomes against these Healthy People 2020 goals:   FS-1:  Reduce infections caused by key pathogens transmitted commonly through food FS-5:  Increase the proportion of consumers who follow key food safety practices

Program Short-Term Success:

A major accomplishment has been the building of the Partnership’s network.  In the past 24 months our number of contributing organizational partners has grown from 18 to 26, and our number of registered BAC! Fighter/Educators has grown from fewer than 9,000 to now 13,000.   With regard to our commitment to three (3) core focus areas we are making major strides.  Some of our areas of accomplishment include:   Focus Area (1): The Partnership convenes and supports practitioner communities inside and outside government to work together to improve outcomes in food safety education.   • We began a series of Webinars for BAC! Fighters intended to involve them in meaningful dialogue, learning and exchange around consumer education topics. (April 10; Sept. 14) • We convene the PFSE contributing partners three times per year, and invite guest speakers and interested nonprofits to join us for conversation on strategic goals, programs and activities. (Feb. 7; May 22 and Sept 18 in 2012) • We have secured one major sponsorship pledge and with this we expect to begin work on the next National Food Safety Education Conference in the fall of 2012.   Focus Area (2):  The Partnership amplifies the collective efforts of thousands of partners/educators and helps them to tell the story of the impact their work has on protecting the health of consumers.   We believe that telling these stories helps to seed even more community-based activity which is a great way to connect with consumers one on one.   • We launched a Field Educator Report blog at teamfoodsafety.org featuring the work of food safety educators across the country. Stories have come in from 4-H groups, schools, food banks, retailers and food industry associations. • We launched the Food Safe Families Action Pledge as a participatory tool to encourage field educators to adopt and utilize the Food Safe Families toolkit. 350 educators from 46 states have pledged to “follow the core four steps to food safety: Clean, Separate, Cook, and Chill!”  • We surveyed BAC! Fighters about their specific program interests, needs and actions. • We communicate via weekly e-cards to a list of more than 13,000 BAC! Fighters.   Focus Area (3): The Partnership leads efforts to evaluate the impact of consumer food safety education, and anticipates needed changes in program approaches that will better align programs with intended outcomes.   • We have entered into a letter of agreement for development of a concept paper that outlines a process and roles of stakeholders in identifying a metric or metrics and data gathering options for measuring the impact of consumer safe food handling education efforts in the United States.

Impact Summary from the Nonprofit Additional Information A Charting Impact Report consists of an organization’s responses to the five questions. Helping validate this self-reported data are three reviews. Once an organization has used the online interface to complete its report, its responses will produce a document with a unique URL that will be shared on this website, on your GuideStar profile, on the reports of charities participating in BBB Wise Giving Alliance evaluations, and – in the future – with other websites and information sources about nonprofits. We encourage organizations to use this URL to share their report on their own website and through their own media channels. Participants will receive guidance about promoting their Charting Impact Report, along with other benefits, once they publish their report.

The Partnership for Food Safety Education delivers trusted, science-based behavioral health messaging and a network of resources that support consumers in their efforts to reduce risk of foodborne illness.   The Partnership teams with more than 14,000 food safety and health educators nationwide to ensure that food safety education efforts are effective, collaborative, measurable and visible, and supports these educators with access to free, evidence-based materials they can use to connect with consumers in their communities on this important health topic.
