Impact Statement

UGM-TC meets the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs of the homeless on a daily basis with shelter, free meals, clothing and laundry facilities.  Each resident receives a comprehensive intake interview with a case manager and a customized service plan for the resident to become self-sufficient.  A medical physical, counseling, parenting classes, life skills and work readiness training are provided. We believe in treating the whole person because while hope often begins with a meal, real life-change and transformation is found in a relationship with Jesus Christ. Promoting spiritual development in the lives of the men, women, and children we serve is of the utmost importance.  We offer 32 services per week, led by our resident chaplain and community ministry volunteers.  The Alpha Course, teaching the basic tenets of Christianity through a 15 lesson discussion series, is provided twice a year.  This program produced 13 resident leaders, who gained confidence and leadership skills. Our nationally recognized Children's Enrichment Program helps our youngest residents overcome the average 1 to 2 grade-level deficiency they face when arriving at UGM-TC.  With an average of 8 hours of tutoring each week, children quickly catch up to and often exceed their peers. UGM-TC accepts no government funding and has a commitment to non-duplication of services. We served 4,225 individuals last year, which is 75% of the local homeless population.  We expect to serve 240,657 meals in 2010 and we house an average of 324 people per day, with 48 beds available for overnight shelter and another 25 cots during inclement weather. UGM-TC is occupied and open 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.  Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served each day to both our residents and our guests from the streets.

Program: Healing Shepherd Clinic

Budget:
--
Category:
Health Care
Population Served:
Homeless

Program Description:

A study done by University of North Texas’ School of Public Health, as well as a  Star-Telegram news series, brought to light the desperate situation faced by the homeless in our community who are without access to rudimentary health care. Too many of them are women and children.

Union Gospel Mission’s Healing Shepherd Clinic opened in late 2008 to provide free primary medical and preventive services to the residents and guests of Union Gospel Mission of Tarrant County. Following the model of Volunteers In Medicine, an international organization dedicated to providing health care for all people, Healing Shepherd Clinic relies on volunteer physicians, nurses, clerical and support staff.

A specially liscensed Family Practice Nurse Practitioner provides accessible, compassionate care for the Mission’s men, women and children as well as oversees clinic operation.

Healing Shepherd Clinic provides a needed service to both the homeless population and to the community at large by taking pressure off local emergency rooms which are currently the indigent person’s only option for care; as well as reducing the hospital’s financial burden.

Program Long-Term Success:

Clinic is still in its first year, but local emergency rooms have already noticed a decrease in use by homeless individuals.

Program Short-Term Success:

Union Gospel Mission's residents and guests have access to primary health care

Program Success Monitored by:

Residents in the Family Center participate in Stress Management and Parenting classes, Employment Workshops; and ALPHA a spiritual development class, all offered on site. Residents’ school age children participate in the Union Gospel Mission Children’s Enrichment Program, which provides after school tutoring, Rainbow Days Christian based program for children to teach coping skills, and Recovery Resource Council Sunshine Club.

Program Description:

McFadden Hall is a unique 16 room long term facility for senior and disabled women. Rather than temporary transitional housing, McFadden residents may stay as long as they can care for themselves. Each woman has a large private room with a semi-private bath. A wide spectrum of help is available through individual case management: schooling – from GED to college courses, counseling, drug and alcohol assessment and treatment, legal advocacy, life skills and anger management classes, tax preparation and help with Social Security and Medicare issues are just a few of the opportunities available for our senior residents.

Volunteer groups bring Bingo, movie nights, teas and social outings on a regular basis. Chapel services and meals in the dining room provide daily contact and social interaction. McFadden Hall addresses the special needs of the aging indigent, providing a haven of safety and security for our senior women.

Program Long-Term Success:

Our senior ladies live with dignity in a safe nurturing environment as long as they can care for themselves.  Should they reach a point where they need more help than our facility can provide, they are helped to find an assisted living facility to continue their care.

Funding Needs

We accept no government funding, relying solely on the generosity of individuals, churches, businesses and foundations to meet our needs.  The 2011 annual budget is $4,096,913.00.  Our residents are provided with everything they need to work their service plan and regain independence.  Donations help us provide food, clothing, toiletries, paper goods, bedding, school supplies, uniforms, children's summer camp tuition, tutoring and more.  Additional needs include technology upgrades, continuing education tuition and building project funds.

Volunteer Needs

We rely on volunteers for all kinds of activities, especially to interact with our residents at chapel services and meal times.  Volunteers give about 21,000 hours of service to the Mission annually, valued at nearly $420,000.  We also welcome volunteers to help with holiday events, decorate a resident's room, provide enrichment activities for children, and work with our Master Gardener's in the vegetable garden and flower beds. Opportunities for service are available 365 days a year.  Serving in the kitchen and pantry, office duties, and working in the warehouse are also services provided by our volunteers. Call 817-338-8402 for information.

Request for In-Kind Contributions

We accept donations of all kinds and can usually arrange for pick-up at homes and businesses.  We use donated clothing and personal items for our residents.  Other items are sold at our Annual Warehouse Sale to raise money for Mission programs.

Same Kind of Different as Me Published
June 01, 2006
"Same Kind of Different as Me" was published in 2006 by a former resident, Denver Moore and a UGM-TC volunteer, Ron Hall.  Since that time response to the book and the story of their friendship has continued to grow.  It will soon be made into a feature movie staring Samuel L. Jackson and other Hollywood "A List" actors.  The second book by Moore and Hall, "What difference do it make?" is now available.

Celebrate the Blessings!

September 23, 2010

Keynote speaker, Norm Miller, Chairman of Interstate Battery shared his spiritual journey culminating in the creation of I AM SECOND.com.

“Celebrate the Blessings” was the theme for our Fall Banquet this year, and we certainly did! Caring friends gathered on September 23 to celebrate how we can change the lives of hurting, homeless people by working together as a community. We’re deeply grateful for the many sponsors who made the event possible, and for everyone who gave at the event to meet more needs this holiday season. Please know that, even if you were unable to attend, we celebrated you and the difference you make through your partnership with UGM-TC!
