Childcare Development Center
- Budget:

$703,000
- Category:

Education
- Population Served:
-
Infants/Babies (under age 5)
Program Description:
The Center is helping children from across
the Greater Houston area reach their potential, with the Child Development Center (CDC), a nationally accredited center through the National Association for the
Education of Young Children (NAEYC). NAEYC is the highest standard for
childcare centers, and less than 10 percent of centers are accredited. A United
Way Bright Beginnings Center, CCC’s Child Developmental Center serves children
from 18 months to five years old. Degreed, bilingual teachers instruct children
in age-appropriate classrooms and encourage interaction in a multicultural
environment with their peers.
The CDC offers an emergent curriculum that
is based on the interest of the child, child assessments, and referrals that continuously
meet the child’s developmental goals. This is done through:
- Encouraging families to become an active
participant in their child’s learning by attending parent meeting meetings, family
involvement activities and joining the parent advisory board
- Supporting children’s language
acquisition skills in the school environment and partnering with families to
extend these experiences to the home
- Providing educational fieldtrips to
children that connect with the curriculum

serving youth ages 5 to 14 years old. The Center offers an AFTERSCHOOL ENRICHMENT
program to keep at-risk and economically disadvantaged youth living in Southwest
Houston communities out of trouble and engaged in quality, rewarding, and
age-appropriate activities. Activities include academic tutoring, leadership
and community skills development, TAAS / TAKS preparation, and various
structured enrichment activities, which are planned around core academic
subjects.
The Center’s SUMMER CAMP explores math,
language arts, science, history, and art concepts in classes based on the
current camp “theme.” The summer camp is enhanced with weekly field trips, cultural
enrichment, and recreational sports activities which encourage physical
fitness. Our COUNSELORS-IN-TRAINING program gives teen volunteers an
opportunity to gain leadership skills as well as work experience. Our safe
environment develops our teens into high character students and future
community leaders.
The Youth Program continues to expand its
services to facilitate the growth of the whole child in its program. New
components include:
- Extra-curricular recreational activities
such as a quilting club, ping-pong club, and a gardening club with a nutrition
component
