Mission Statement
Mission: To promote best management practices within the nonprofit sector. Volunteer management consultants (men and women who have held or currently hold executive, senior-level management or professional positions in the for-profit sector, many from Fortune 500 companies) help nonprofits be more management- savvy, accountable, efficient and as a result, more effective, stewards of their own funding, and more sustainable. ESCH has served almost 1000 nonprofits since beginning in 1984. We are one of 26 ESC's nationwide and the only one in Texas. Our cost-recovery fees are well below market rate and on a sliding fee scale, so that nonprofits with limited resources, who may need our services most, can benefit.

CEO/Executive Director Statement:
Since 2008, the nonprofit community has been facing a difficult economic reality. Many now believe that crisis-level economic ups and downs will become the new normal. As leaders, we can accept this new reality with dread or with a sense of “rising to the challenge.” The Executive Service Corps of Houston (ESCH) has chosen to rise. Believing that now, more than ever, nonprofits need our help, we developed a new strategic plan in 2008. The plan challenges ESCH to increase the number of nonprofits served annually by 2013 and to develop new, relevant services.
Our corps of over 70 volunteer management consultants gave time and expertise to develop new marketing/development strategies and materials as well as new seminars and consulting projects such as Event Planning and Strategic Plan Implementation. These committed men and women also helped nonprofits in the Greater Houston area through 150 separate consulting projects. Together, they gave almost 7,000 hours helping nonprofits build resiliency as well as planned responsiveness to the new reality.
These volunteers also help ESCH continue good stewardship. For every dollar given to ESCH by our generous donors, ESCH provides $4 worth of services. In 2010, this amounted to $1.1 million worth of management consultation that nonprofits otherwise would have had to purchase.
We know that we and other nonprofits can’t meet the challenges alone. We need both the nonprofit and the business sectors working together to ensure a vibrant, healthy community. Thus, we have begun to provide more opportunities for the business community to partner with the nonprofit sector.
To reach our strategic goal, we are adding resources for marketing, program management and program evaluation. One goal is to have full utilization of our Executive Leadership Coaching program, Developing Development and our Financial Fitness for Nonprofits program.

General Public/Unspecified
Program Description:
Services include individualized management consultation projects, leadership coaching, management seminars, telephone assistance and assistance with the 501 ( c) (3) startup process. Our clients are nonprofits with 501-C-3 status or educational or governmental agencies. ESCH has a diverse pool of volunteer consultants (N=75) who help non profits: (1) re-energize and, when necessary, reform their boards; (2) identify desired futures and take strategic steps towards those futures; (3) develop funding and marketing plans to move towards fiscal sustainability; (4) deal with human resource issues that limit efficiency and/or create financial risks; (5) develop systems of financial accountability and transparency; (6) use information technology to streamline operations; and (7) help executive directors build leadership skills. The ultimate beneficiaries, however, are the people in the community who, as a result of our capacity-building efforts, receive new, more or better services from the nonprofits that we assist.
Program Long-Term Success:
Served 430 nonprofits in 2009 (119 through consultation projects; another 311 that only attended seminars)
Program Short-Term Success:
Evaluation shows that nonprofits participating in individualized consulting services show a statistically significant improvement on a measure of organizational capacity. Seminar participants give an average rating of 4.4 (on a 5-pt scale) to the usefulness of the seminars. The vast majority (99%) of seminar participants note that they learned at least one thing that they can implement immediately.

Program Description:
ESCH's Executive Leadership Develoment Coaching program combines a strength-based approach with the emotional intelligence model. Following an assessment of strengths, the executive director identies one or more leadership skills to address. Through weekly face-to-face coaching with a trained coach, the executive director learns how to use his/her signature strengths to develop identified skills. Homework, practice and review are essential components to the coaching program. Coaching sessions occur weekly for the first three months and then bi-weekly for the next three months. Evaluation shows that clients report improvement in at least three of the skills selected for coaching.

Funding Needs
Executive Service Corps is in need of operational funding to better serve the nonprofit community. The organization has held steady for 27 years and continues to work quietly and effectively for the community by offering consulting services at low, reasonable fees. Staff is minimal to manage the needs of the consultants and ongoing contributions.
Volunteer Needs
ESCH needs office volunteer assistance for data entry, media list updating and ongoing filing.
