Mission Statement

The Nehemiah Center is a multi-faceted ministry model that provides assistance to low income families who are invested in seeking a better future for their children through education, emotional wellness and spiritual enrichment.  This Christian-based non-profit organization works with children attending public schools in Houston’s inner city. Our motto is “Neighbors helping neighbors create a safe haven in which children are motivated, inspired and equipped to realize their God-given potential.”  Our goal is to build children’s lives, minds, hearts and spirits by working with the entire family.  The Center serves and follows the children as toddlers through their college years by engaging and retaining family participation year after year, creating the opportunity to build trust and a sense of community through relationships.  The Center strives to provide services to assist children in overcoming barriers to their academic success.

CEO/Executive Director Statement:

The Nehemiah Center is described in many ways by the many people who are involved with us. To the parent who entrusts his/her child to us each day, it’s peace of mind and support; to the volunteer who helps strengthen a child's academic skills, it’s a blessing; to the donor, it’s a life-changing investment.  For my staff, it’s not a job, but a calling to serve. I see the Nehemiah Center as a place of hope. My staff and I work hard to meet the needs of the children and their families. What makes us a unique organization, is our flexibility.  We flex with the needs of the community and develop the necessary programs or services to meet the need.  When Katrina hit, we helped the youngest victims with free services, and still do.  Our focus is giving children an opportunity to experience the "abundant life." Education is the primary vehicle we use to accomplish that.  However, we have come to understand that the success of a child's academic career rests heavily on the involvement of the parent. So, we invest resources, time, and effort in educating and equipping parents with the fundamentals necessary to navigate the educational system.

Volunteer Needs

The Center relies heavily on community volunteers who devote one or more hour(s) per week. These kind and qualified tutors help the children with homework and special projects, develop the children’s math and reading skills, and assist the children in other miscellaneous activities. Approximately five volunteers per day (Monday through Thursday) work with the children individually or in a small group classroom setting. Each volunteer is assigned to a grade level. This assignment becomes permanent at the request of the volunteer, who typically prefers to follow the class through the years. Several veteran volunteers have worked with the same group of children from Kindergarten through the Fifth Grade. The relationship established is precious.
