Mission Statement

Our mission is to enhance people's quality of life through raising public awareness of the benefits of music therapy, educating the public concerning the therapeutic benefits of music, and increasing accessibility to music therapy services as well as advancing research in music therapy. We believe the power of music can transform and make a unique and life-changing difference in people's lives.

Impact Statement

Since the establishment of the organization in 2002, Sounding Joy has served more than 10,000 Hawaii's people through our educational and clinical programs. It has significantly raised the awareness of the benefits of music therapy in our community and improved people's accessibility to music therapy, which was extremely limited in Hawaii before. A breakthrough happened when State grants were awarded to Sounding Joy to work with at-risk youth and needy families in 2008. The grants from the Department of Human Services have enabled our organization to offer music therapy to more than 600 statewide at-risk youths and needy families who are most vulnerable. This year, Sounding Joy will present at the World Congress of Music Therapy in Seoul, Korea, about this particular programs as the first participants from Hawaii in history.

In 2010, Sounding Joy held the first honoree gala to honor Dr. Arthur Harvey, the cofounder of the organization, for his dedicated services and contribution to public education in music therapy. The success of the gala, named, "A Morning of Music", has become the organization's major annual fundraising event.
