Evidence of Impact

Center for Biological Diversity raises awareness of many environmental issues to support a vast diversity of wild animals and plants. Their fight against oil companies is remarkable, along with steering legislation to protect endangered species. CBD’s advocacy for sustainable communities also campaigns against suburban sprawl to protect natural lands. The organization impacts Bay Area and beyond with its high-level work.

Raises Environmental Awareness
They put out numerous examples of advocating for endangered species. This group adds value to the climate movement by being a leading authority on endangered species law and this has presented a great hook for additional pressure on climate. Center for Biological Diversity has done great work on black carbon, and was actually able to engage republicans (!). Foundation Professional
While Center for Biological Diversity works beyond the Bay Area, they are one of the most essential organizations we have to bring high-level, quality science-based analysis directly to the policy area (legislatures, courts, agencies) around the most vulnerable ecosystems (in the context of climate change). Foundation Professional
Center for Biological Diversity has recently effectively engaged in issues related to hydraulic fracturing. It has also worked on many related issues for adaption. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Center for Biological Diversity has successfully filed lawsuits against bad development projects and pushed the envelope farther than almost any other environmental nonprofit organization. While they sometimes oppose climate-friendly projects, like solar in the desert, they bring a vital perspective to the debate. In particular, their work suing sprawling real estate projects under California Environmental Quality Act has been very helpful to place a leftward marker in the debate for other environs to react to. Nonprofit Senior Staff
What Center for Biological Diversity does is pushing for sustainable community development in the Bay Area that reduces the area's reliance on fossil fuels and prioritizes protecting natural lands. CBD also focuses on ways to ecologically manage and protect the Bay Area shoreline. Nonprofit Senior Staff
The organization’s impact lies in raising awareness of hydraulic fracturing for gas throughout California, and advocating for the protection of the Clean Air Act and US Environmental Protection Agency's ability to regulate greenhouse gases. They led numerous successful lawsuits to protect endangered species. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Successful in Protecting Endangered Species
They demonstrated successes in getting species imperiled by climate change protected under Endangered Species Act, successes in applying California Environmental Quality Act to climate issues, as well as recent litigation victory regarding hydraulic fracturing in California. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Preventing Species Extinction
They are very focused on preventing species extinction. That requires protecting habitat, reducing toxic pollution and addressing climate change. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Litigation Tactics
Lawsuits are key, and they are more than willing to launch them sometimes even when success appears dicey. Nonprofit Senior Staff

Organizational Strengths

Many experts agree that Center for Biological Diversity delivers on its promise and fights effectively using innovative tools to hold government accountable. Unlike other organizations, as several experts underlined, CBD wins its litigation battles without a compromise. Their staff has strong expertise and upholds environmental values.

Innovative Litigation Strategies
This is a great organization that does important legal work statewide, but I'm not sure what it's direct local impact has been. Foundation Professional
The Center for Biological Diversity is at the forefront of identifying underutilized tools in existing environmental laws to address climate change and carbon pollution, often tools that other groups have overlooked or unfairly dismissed (such as the Clean Air Act). It has also been very effective finding ways to achieve better implementation of these tools through innovative litigation strategies. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Deliver without Compromise
Center for Biological Diversity has also not compromised its position or environmental values. Other organizations have compromised environmental values or have stuck with false solutions like unbridled REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation) carbon offsets. Foundation Professional
Center for Biological Diversity is not afraid to get involved in litigation and regularly holds government agencies accountable through lawsuits, which is one of the most effective ways of ensuring that the government carries out commitments it has made in the area of climate change. CBD is a great organization - it's well run, they file precedent-setting lawsuits on climate change and have a good track record of winning. Currently they're fighting fracking in California, which could affect some communities in the Bay Area. In addition, CBD is one of the only organizations I know of that has done work to force regulatory agencies to deal with ocean acidification, which results from overabundance of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere - as a result of CBD's work, this is now something that environmental agencies are taking into account. Nonprofit Senior Staff
One of the most important differences between Center for Biological Diversity and other national environmental organizations is that they never compromise. They stick to their guns and are not influenced by the politics surrounding an issue. Organizations like the Sierra Club, Natural Resources Defense Council, and Environmental Defense Fund consistently "sell out" their grassroots constituents in order to achieve a compromised political settlement. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Expert Staff
The staff is professional, smart, strategic, and moves quickly - not stuck in too much of the over-deliberation of large non-profits. The battles they choose to fight are highly strategic, and together help build a broader strategy for the many other groups working as their partners. Foundation Professional
Center for Biological Diversity has considerable expertise in the area of climate change, and has been effective at organizing efforts to oppose hydraulic fracturing. Nonprofit Senior Staff
They have strong, passionate, committed leadership. They also combine strong legal expertise with good science. Nonprofit Senior Staff

Areas for Improvement

Center for Biological Diversity sometimes handles too many issues for a small staff. Because of this, some experts recommend to expand their core staff as well as try to involve more audience in their agenda. They could work on their marketing strategy to promote their work with the general public. More analysis and research would also improve support of their causes.

Expand to Impact Greater Audience
The organization could broaden outreach, audience, and membership. Foundation Professional
Compared to the largest national organizations, the climate staff of the Center for Biological Diversity is relatively small, so further expansion of this program would be beneficial, though in terms of impact, this comparatively small group of people has been able to achieve more than much larger groups. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Provide More Research and Analysis
Center for Biological Diversity may want to consider providing more research and analysis as opposed to litigation and lobbying. Nonprofit Senior Staff
They are probably not as widely known as the others.
Better Marketing Strategy
I don't think Center for Biological Diversity is well known outside of wildlife and climate change groups. I think they could do a better job of sharing their work with the general public. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Rethink Communications
They are sometimes a little too doctrinaire, but that is a small price to pay. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Too Many Issues for Small Staff
They can spread themselves too thinly and take on more issues than they can handle. Nonprofit Senior Staff
