- Population Served:
-
Youth/Adolescents only (14 - 19 years)
Program Description:
Annually, hundreds of students across New Mexico are engaged in CCV’s mock trial program for several months of the academic year. Students actively experience the excitement of working in teams, exchanging ideas, setting goals, and examining issues while interacting with positive role models from their communities. By studying the case and preparing opening statements, direct and cross-examinations, and closing arguments, students also learn to think on their feet, to take and defend either side of an issue, to hone their presentation skills, and to improve their written and oral communication skills.
Program Long-Term Success:
Long term studies of Americans show that those who participate in extracurricular activities in high school remain more civically engaged than their contemporaries, even decades later. As a result, the provision of opportunities to engage in these activities is critical to student success and such participation by students should be encouraged and valued. In addition, recent evidence indicates that simulations of voting, mock trials, legislative deliberation, and diplomacy in schools can lead to heightened political knowledge and interest.
Program Short-Term Success:
The Mock Trial program helps students to develop the skills necessary for the mastery of state content standards for language arts and social studies. A rubric of the actual skills achieved appears on the CCV web site at civicvalues.org.
Program Success Monitored by:
Evaluations are completed by teacher sponsors of mock trial teams across the state who rank the knowledge, skills and attitudes of their mock trial students. The Board reviews these evaluations to identify changes needed, if any.
Program Success Examples:
Improved grades and attendance among participants; students go on to college who say they otherwise would not have.
