Impact Statement

REPRINTED FROM THE PHOENIX NEW TIMES BEST OF PHOENIX 2009

Before there was a First Friday or a Roosevelt Row, the best — and for a while, the only — place to find alternative contemporary art was Alwun House. Folks looking for a funky, big-city art scene had only Alwun, downtown's first gallery, to rely on for "something different," art-wise. The first independent non-profit art space, Alwun set the current trend of galleries' advocating for artists with its Alwun House Foundation, the first local arts organization to address the significance of historical buildings.

The name is phonetic for "all one," as in "we're all in this together," a principle that Alwun House founders Kim Moody and Dana Johnson have clung to since purchasing the old, dilapidated property and commencing their rehabilitation on the house and property in 1971. Built in 1912 by shop owner John Sedler, Alwun originally rested on five acres on the northeast corner of 12th Street and Roosevelt, overlooking alfalfa fields south of Roosevelt, before there were even sidewalks out that way. Following its funky restoration, Alwun House quickly became the first gallery in downtown Phoenix, and has stayed on as a maverick torchbearer for the downtown arts community. Its central floor houses an art gallery; its basement is home to a multi-media theater, and its rambling backyard gardens and patio are the settings for poetry slams, music concerts, and exhibits by local visual and performance artists. Alwun's annual Exotic Art Show showcases uncensored and frankly naughty works, and its bar and cafe make this a jumping joint for any kind of off-hours party. Alwun's a three-decades-old mainstay among those of us who need an alternative art fix.

CEO/Executive Director Statement:

News Flash:
Our Board just approved development of a "Green Art Park."

After years of needing more parking; we’ve experienced a convergence of circumstance where we can acquire two adjacent properties, and remove two homes cited for blight.  Design elements will include a creative community garden around expanded parking; Integrating green, art and parking.  To accomplish this Alwun House is kicking off a $100,000 capital campaign.

Noted as a historic cultural node, these assets will only increase our long standing community contribution.  We believe art is indispensable in transforming community, on block at a time.

You may know us for our popular cutting-edge performances and social art events; and maybe about our engagement In community development.  It’s those Festive Fundrasiers that provide the means to accomplish that goal.

As downtown's seminal nonprofit arts organization and performance incubator we are volunteer-based.  Want proof? Our volunteer team just cemented in stone, patio and garden improvements - added in 2 tons of mulch, to enrich our patio and gardens amenities, like, more shade for our little ol' cultural oasis.  All will be completed in time for September's, '11-'12 Season Opening Blast!

We sincerely thank you for your continued grass-roots support.

Program Description:

A unique social bonding exercise in Alwun’s informal garden setting. The friendly trust-building “Meet and Greet” series brings together community and police; Central City Precinct Commanders and beat officers, Garfield Organization members and residents. For several years now, this activity successfully brakes down perception barriers, encouraging light interaction – over food, games, and resident talent entertaining. These events increase attendance and enthusiasm at our monthly Garfield Community & Law Enforcement meetings, and engage the art of social dialogue connecting residents and police.

Funding Needs

We’ve been handed the largest physical growth opportunity since acquiring the House nearly 40 years ago, that will double our existing footprint. Our extraordinary new undertaking will transform two adjacent blighted lots into a Green Art Park. Our goal is to acquire and develop these lots into a tree filled sculpture garden, and increase our parking.  We’re appealing to our grass-roots supporters, friends, members, and businesses for contributions or a pledge, small or large, to help us transform this blight into an aesthetic community asset.

$150,000 will allow us to purchase the two blighted properties, demolish what is left of the structures, purchase the materials, design and build the Green Art Park, and commission the artwork integrated throughout.

Volunteer Needs

Whether you volunteer for a couple of hours or a couple of days each month, you power our community programs and special art events. Our volunteers make Phoenix cultural arts and historic neighborhood communities come alive!

Your decision to be a part of Alwun House, volunteering your skills and time, is the foundation of Alwun House’s growth since 1971.

At a recent Volunteer Team Party many were surprised to meet 30 volunteers that most had never met before (like newbies and different activities). All enjoyed sharing stories, and catching up on what our fellow creative-types have been working on (like our new youtube videos).

Alwun House volunteer opportunities fit every level of interest and availability, including:  Events staffing, developing our graounds and gardens, reception & administration, pre-event preparation, video production, social media projects, and stage production.

Volunteers Make Summer Garden Enhancement
June 01, 2010

Our volunteer "Call For Arms" dumped tons for uncontained trash for pick-up. Our hardy “Koncrete Krew” completed three new concrete and stone bench with butt conforming "pillow rocks." The crew included; Rand Lyons, Brian Popovec and Brother Dick Kelly, neighbors Francis Ciochon, Carol and Dave Shaw, Tom Solnit, Mary Roberts; and team players Susan Vasquez, Glee Harrington, Jim "Stardust" Haubrock.   Lately, Alwun House notes more neighbors participating in our volunteer projects. Down and Dirty engagement as an arts organization in community building.
