Mission Statement

The purpose of Books for a Better World is to promote literacy in Latin America by providing high quality children's books to children who have little or no access to books.  We seek to enfranchise, to empower and to motivate children in Latin America by establishing libraries.  It was established to help break the cycle of illiteracy that cripples developing nations. The school day is usually dull and unstimulating. Often, there are no books. The students spend the day copying and taking dictation. There is little reason to attend school thus the children drop out and illiteracy continues. In rural schools in Central America as many as 75% of all children are in grades 1 -3. Most children have never seen a book that is not a schoolbook and there is little connection between learning the vowels, learning to sound out words and reading a story. Children's literature increases a child's ability to imagine, to think analytically and to experience the world with greater compassion. The ability to read is empowering.

Impact Statement

Books for a Better World partners with schools in our host countries to create libraries or to add to existing library collections in rural areas. Language development and vocabulary building are emphasized through the use of the charming, imaginative stories and legends from all parts of the world.

BBW buys and delivers new books to schools that are often in remote locations where reliable mail or courier service is not yet available. We send volunteers with the books to ensure delivery as well as to engage the students who receive them.
