CLIMATE LEADERSHIP CORPS
- Budget:

General Public/Unspecified
Program Description:

Through our grassroots network of impassioned volunteers known as the Climate Leadership Corps, our organization brings the reality of and solutions to the climate crisis to strategic countries. Our Climate Leaders, a cadre of passionate climate volunteers and educators, deliver presentations in schools, homes, churches, workplaces and government forums. These presentations both educate people about climate change and build local networks of climate activists who work in their own communities and countries demanding solutions. Our Climate Leaders are pivotal agents for change.

These volunteers are among our most informed, dedicated and eager-to engage members. Each of them has been personally trained by Chairman Al Gore to deliver a multimedia slide show featured in the Academy Award-winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth. The slide show is continually updated to convey the scope and urgency of the climate challenge, drawing from his latest book, Our Choice: A Plan to Solve the Climate Crisis and other endeavors.

Climate Leaders add personal stories to their presentations, specifically describing how they woke up to the climate crisis and why they have chosen to join in and lead the movement. This aspect of the program is of particular value since research indicates the importance of trusted messengers in climate change communications. Learning about the impacts of climate change from a member of one’s own cultural community is quite powerful.
Our staff in the U.S., as well as our branches in Australia, Canada, China, India, Indonesia, and Mexico, support the Climate Leadership Corps with information and tools necessary to achieve their mission. Through the Climate Leader Web Portal, Climate Leaders download the most recent version of the slide show, obtain factsheets on topics relevant to their presentations, manage presentation requests and stay connected with each other.

Organizational Strengths
The Climate Reality Project is led by Al Gore. He is not only extremely dedicated, but he is well connected and in many ways has become the face of the climate change movement. One expert points out that Al Gore is sometimes polarizing, so it is fortunate that the Climate Reality Project is also led by Maggie Fox. The organization has a large network of activists and a great training model for adding more to the ranks. They also have a great view into the political system and are sure to share information with their constituents.

Areas for Improvement
The Climate Reality Project is in the process of rebranding itself, and experts have mixed opinions on their approach. The organization’s rebranding has included a name change; they are formerly known as the Alliance for Climate Protection. This is partially due to the polarizing nature of Al Gore. One expert points out the organization should continue to celebrate Gore’s role in the organization and not hide it. Another expert simply notes that this is the reality for the organization. Both agree that as a result of the drastic branding change, the organization is now needing to re-establish itself. The Climate Reality Project may also want to consider changing the way they outreach to their constituents. Tier email communications are often donation requests, and they may be over-saturating their audience with that message. They should also consider outreaching to a broader audience.
