Impact Statement from Nonprofit
Top Accomplishments include:
- Expanded the growth and impact of the Illegal Dumping Task Force. This includes having the Annual Litter Index cleanliness rating of the Truckee Meadows go from a "4" in 2006 which indicates "major illegal dumpsites are present, requiring equipment or extra manpower for removal" to a "1.1" on the Litter Index scale in which a "1" indicates "that virtually no litter can be observed."
- Connected with 3,000 individuals through community presentations about the importance of recycling and waste/litter reduction.
- Educated 2,456 youth through Waste Warrior presentations and Paper Making Workshops.
- Recycled over 10,000 Christmas Trees and over 120 tons of phone books, planted over 5,000 flowers.
- Engaged over 2,500 volunteers who removed over 150 tons of trash and debris from in and around the Truckee Meadows.
- Received "Silver Star" Award for Civic Engagement.
Goals include:
- Working with you, we will become America's cleanest community!
- Maintain successes of the Illegal Dumping Task Force including the current level of community cleanliness. This becomes even more of a concern in tough economic times as individuals may be more inclined to dump illegally than pay dump fines.
- Maintain volunteer involvement and community education efforts.
- Continue to foster and maintain strong community partnerships.
- Maintain funding for community beautification and education programs.

Chief Executive
Christi Cakiroglu
Term:
Since
Dec
2002
Chief Executive Profile:
KTMB has made great strides programmatically and administratively during Christi’s tenure as Executive Director. Since 2002 KTMB has completely overhauled its bookkeeping practices, seen a marked increase in the number and variety of community supporters, and has experienced a 100% increase in the number of residents regularly engaged in beautification activities throughout the Truckee Meadows. Christi's work background prior to 2002 includes Business and Nonprofit Management.
CEO/Executive Director Statement:
Having grown up in the Truckee Meadows I am thankful that KTMB allows me the opportunity to act on my enthusiasm for the beauty of this area. In spite of the enjoyment I derive from KTMB's successes and partnerships I look forward to the day when organizations like KTMB aren't needed and littering/illegal dumping is taboo and waste reduction/recycling is second nature.

Program:
Beautification
- Budget:
-
$115,000
- Category:
-
Environment
- Population Served:
-
General Public/Unspecified
Program Description:
Beautification Programs: include Adopt-A-Spot roadside litter pickup, Adopt-A-Park, Neighborhood, Open Space and River Cleanups. Christmas Tree Recycling (trees that are used for mulch are not left in open spaces or along roadways).
Program Long-Term Success:
To have a community free of litter and illegal dump sites.
Program Short-Term Success:
During Fiscal Year 2007-2008 over 2,500 volunteers contributed over 6,500 volunteer hours to remove over 150 tons of trash during KTMB neighborhood, open space and river cleanups. Eight Adopt-A-Park projects were completed, 79 Adopt-A-Spot roadside litter cleanups were conducted and over 9,000 Christmas Trees were recycled.
Program Success Monitored by:
KTMB Project Partners and Staff monitor the amount of trash removed, cleanups conducted and number of trees chipped. Comprehensive evaluations are completed by volunteers for every KTMB project with results being reviewed by the KTMB Program Committee. KTMB's Program Committee is comprised of Board and community volunteers to maintain KTMB's high level of program effectiveness.
Program Success Examples:
The 2006 Annual Litter Index survey conducted by volunteers showed that Open Space areas rated a "4" on a four point scale in which a "4" indicates that "major illegal dumpsites are present, requiring equipment or extra manpower for removal" and a "1" indicates that "virtually no litter can be observed." The results from 2006 resulted in KTMB refocusing beautification efforts on Open Space areas through the Great Truckee Meadows Community Cleanup and the development and coordination of the Illegal Dumping Task Force. Results from the 2008 Litter Index reflect the success of these efforts showing that Open Space areas improved dramatically in cleanliness to a "1.1" overall. Neighborhood cleanliness also remains high scoring a "1.3" in the 2008 Survey.
Program:
Education
- Budget:
-
$45,000
- Category:
-
Environment
- Population Served:
-
General Public/Unspecified
-
Children Only (5 - 14 years)
Program Description:
Education Programs include: the Annual Litter Index to raise awareness about the perceived level of cleanliness in the Truckee Meadows, free Paper Making Workshops offering youth of all ages a hands on opportunity to see recycling in action, free Waste Warrior recycling and 'anatomy of a landfill' educational presentations. Waste Warrior presentations meet the Science Standards of the Washoe County School District.
Program Long-Term Success:
To have educated and engaged youth and a community of recyclers.
Program Short-Term Success:
During the Fiscal Year 2007-2008 nearly 2,500 youth were educated about the importance of not littering and waste reduction.
Program Success Monitored by:
KTMB Staff track the number of youth who participate in Waste Warrior and Paper Making presentations. KTMB receives additional feedback through teacher surveys that evaluate the effectiveness of presentations in engaging and communicating with youth. Comprehensive evaluations are completed by volunteers for every KTMB project with results being reviewed by the KTMB Program Committee. KTMB's Program Committee is comprised of Board and community volunteers to maintain KTMB's high level of program effectiveness.
Program Success Examples:
Waste Warrior and Paper Making presentations regularly receive high praise from teachers who increasingly have less time and resources and rely on these free presentations to educate their classes. Teachers also report that students tend to be more receptive to receiving information from an "outside" source. Parents regularly report that they did not recycle before their child became a Waste Warrior.
The Litter Index invites the community to participate in the evaluation process and in recent years local media have widely reported on the results. This has raised the level of awareness (and debate) about litter and reminds everyone about the importance of having a clean community. Litter Index results are invaluable to community leaders and residents who are working on effective means to create and sustain a clean community. For more information about the importance of the Litter Index please see the “Examples of Program Success” narrative under Beautification programs.
Funding Needs
KTMB requires a little over $175,000 in community support annually to operate each of its ten beautification and education programs. This number jumps to well over $250,000 with the addition of in kind support. KTMB’s current ratio of program cash expenses to total cash expenses is 87%. This does not include in kind support, of which nearly 100% is for program support.
Volunteer Needs
KTMB’s programs require a minimum of 2,000 volunteers annually to complete short term projects ranging from open space, river and roadside litter pickups to flower plantings. KTMB is also seeking volunteer educators to provide Waste Warrior and Paper Making presentations. Training is provided and each presentation generally lasts from 1-2 hours. Clerical assistance would also be welcome.
Request for In-Kind Contributions
Last year KTMB received over $110,000 of in kind support from everything including office space from Washoe County, the removal of abandoned vehicles inaccessible by land by Army Guard helicopters during a training exercise, to intern volunteer help and trash bags. KTMB is always in need of everything from t-shirt donations to banners and pickers. Currently KTMB needs 3 three-line telephones, donor software, paper (white, yellow, and green), and clerical support.
