Impact Statement from Nonprofit
Kids & Horses provides
equine-assisted therapeutic riding lessons for special needs children. More than just a riding program, Kids &
Horses has increased student’s strength and flexibility, improved motor skills,
promoted speech and cognitive reasoning and has built relationships and social
skills.
Kids
& Horses is the only premiere accredited PATH (Professional Association of
Therapeutic Horsemanship International) equine-assisted therapeutic riding
center in northern Nevada. PATH is an
international organization that ensures safety standards, provides insurance
coverage and educational requirements for all certified centers.
Kids
& Horses enhances quality of life, provides therapeutic benefits, emotional
support and recreational activity to an often overlooked, needy
population. Kids & Horses assists,
among other disabilities, those with: paralysis, multiple sclerosis, autism,
muscular dystrophy, Down’s syndrome, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury,
learning disabilities, emotional issues and stroke.
Kids
& Horses has never turned a student away from our equine-assisted therapeutic
riding program because of an inability to pay. Kids & Horses provides scholarships and financial aid to families who could not ride otherwise. Students’
(age and ability dependent), as well as their guardians, receiving scholarships
are required to complete a minimum of 15 hours of volunteer service hours to
Kids & Horses.
Kids & Horses does not
only provide quality of life to our students. We also provide quality of
life and a second career to our horses. Currently
there are five program horses in the Kids & Horses program. Our
horses are donated or are on lease from their original owners. All of the
horses that are given to Kids & Horses are specially trained and are chosen
for their gentle and kind demeanor.

Chief Executive
Ms. Alexis Roman Hill
Term:
Since
May
2010
Chief Executive Profile:
Alexis previously worked as sales supervisor for the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival after a three-year stint as a city planner in Sparks. She earned a BA degree in political science from Texas A&M and has completed a MPA masters degree in public administration at University of Nevada. Alexis’ primary responsibilities are implementing a consistent year-round grant writing program, a year-round corporate and philanthropic sponsorship program, manage year-round fundraisers, to coordinate aggressive volunteer recruitment and pursue other potential revenue sources. The main goal of Kids & Horses is to provide world-class instruction to as many students as possible. Our immediate, short-term goal is to increase our number of students from thirty-one to forty-five.
CEO/Executive Director Statement:
Welcome to Kids & Horses
Kids & Horses is northern Nevada’s largest and only premier certified equine-assisted therapeutic riding center for special needs children and adults. Kids & Horses provides therapeutic riding lessons which increase strength and flexibility, improve motor skills, promote speech and cognitive reasoning, and build relationships and social skills in our students.
Through Kids & Horses’ scholarships and community, we provide a positive, empowering experience for those with special needs. Parents and families can celebrate their loved ones’ accomplishments in a supportive, caring environment where a sense of welcome and belonging is extended to all.
Students’ lessons are individually designed to achieve predetermined therapeutic goals, and are tailored for each rider’s specific needs, ability, and stamina. Detailed records of achievement are provided to parents and health-care professionals, and used to update each rider’s goals.
Kids & Horses is proud of our growth. In 2010 Kids & Horses assisted 23 students; we are currently assisting 31 students this 2011 summer semester and will add another 12 students by the end of the year. Yes, the unmet need is great. We have over 15 students on our waiting-list who cannot afford lessons and we expect the number on the list to increase. Given that many of our students and families already struggle to pay for runaway healthcare costs, donations to Kids & Horses are critically important. -
Children and Youth (infants - 19 years.)

Program Description:
Kids & Horses has never turned a student away from our equine-assisted therapeutic riding program because of an inability to pay. Since the founding of Kids & Horses in 1999 we have found that some 50% of our special needs students are in need of financial assistance in order to participate in equine-assisted therapeutic riding. Given that many of our students and families already struggle with runaway healthcare costs, scholarships are critically important.
If new students would like to enter the program and Kids & Horses has not secured funding for them, they are placed on a waiting list until a scholarship spot opens. Students’ (age and ability dependent), as well as their guardians, receiving scholarships are required to complete a minimum of 15 hours of volunteer service hours to Kids & Horses.

Kids & Horses does not only provide quality of life to our students. We also provide quality of life and a second career to our horses.
Currently there are five program horses in the Kids & Horses program. Our horses are donated or are on lease from their original owners. All of the horses that are given to Kids & Horses are specially trained and are chosen for their gentle and kind demeanor.
Although the program horses are perfect for the students, they also are typically older and have health problems. The following items are required to care for these special animals: veterinarian and Ferrier services, horse feed, horse supplements (arthritis joint supplements, salt, Powerpac, etc.), horse supplies and equipment (tack: pads, saddles, halters, etc.), board and equine manager, with the cost totaling: $10,000 per horse
