Scope: We established a partnership with the Cleveland Y (and other organizations) to provide workshops about sustainable development and science to 4th to 8th grade students.

Cost: For each $10 donated we can provide a 2 hrs workshop for 1 student.

Impact: Teach groups of up to 35 students. Create 5 internships, offer 4-6 volunteering opportunities to community members.

No último estudo da Iniciativa para Acesso ao Credito (FAI) sobre a democratização ao acesso bancário, ficou comprovado que cerca de 2,5 bilhões adultos não tem acesso a serviços financeiros formais para economizar ou pedir dinheiro emprestado.

Cerca de 2,2 bilhões destes adultos vivem na África, Ásia, América Latina e no Oriente Médio.

Microfinanças é a solução natural para tais disparates econômicos. Dr. Mohamed Yunnus (Premio Nobel da Paz em 2005) já comprovou que quando uma pessoa pobre, porém trabalhadora, recebe uma oportunidade de ter acesso a atividades financeiras básicas, as chances desta pessoa sair do estado de pobreza absoluta, serão multiplicadas em torno de 50%.

Dos 1,2 bilhões de adultos que usam serviços financeiros formais na África, Ásia e Oriente Médio, pelo menos 75%, ou um pouco mais de 800 milhões, vivem com menos de US$ 5 por dia.

Na América Latina, esse percentual é de 65% da população total, o que equivale a 250 milhões de adultos. No Brasil, a hiperinflação criou vários incentivos para a expansão do setor bancário com agências em todas esquinas para evitar perder valor do dinheiro sacado. Mesmo depois de anos de superinflação, os bancos de varejo conseguiram manter uma demanda por agências.

A maioria da população brasileira tem fácil acesso a uma agência bancária. Mas o país ainda tem dificuldades em simplificar e popularizar o acesso ao crédito para a criação de pequenos negócios. E o grande problema se encontra em microfinanças para clientes da classe C e D.

A Compartamos Banco começou no México como uma ONG e se desenvolveu em uma operação gigantesca devido a ausência de bancos comerciais em regiões pobres e rurais.

Um dos produtos mais populares deles são os crediários, cujo foco é o aumento de consumo das classes C e D e os empréstimos para a criação de pequenos negócios. Mas mesmo assim, os níveis de pagamento da Compartamos estão decaindo e devido a competição de mercado, novas empresas de micro-crédito estão surgindo e os clientes existentes estão tomando múltiplos empréstimos (para pagar uma dívida anterior com uma dívida nova) usando o mesmo item (geladeira, TV ou veículo) como garantia.

Então, qual é o problema principal para empresas de microfinanças?

O problema é que esse segmento da população não tem acesso a educação financeira. Mesmo em outros países com quase nenhuma agência bancária nas áreas pobres ou rurais, parte do segredo do sucesso em empreendimentos no campo das microfinanças encontra-se diretamente na importância da educação financeira.

Na verdade, a maioria das operadoras de microfinanças nestes países tem tanto interesse na criação de novas contas, quanto na sustentabilidade de seus modelos.

Suas operações focam em fazer empréstimos apenas aos clientes que se provam capazes de entender os termos necessários para repagar as próprias dividas.

O resultado é um sistema de microcrédito forte com base em um modelo bem calibrado. Apenas os clientes que se esforçam para entender as regras básicas de um empréstimo tem acesso ao crédito.
