Mission Statement
TAPS offers immediate and long-term emotional help, hope, and healing to all who are grieving the death of a loved one in military service to America, regardless of relationship to the deceased, geography, or circumstance of the death. TAPS meets its mission by providing peer-based support, crisis care, casualty casework assistance, and grief and trauma resources.

Impact Summary from the Nonprofit
Since 1994 TAPS has provided services and support to over 40,000 survivors who have lost a loved one in military service to America. In 2012 TAPS received 4,807 newly bereaved survivors, an average of 13 per day, every day of the year, nearly double the 2011 average of 7 per day. In the first months of 2013 the daily intake number continues to increase. TAPS provides care and comfort no matter the circumstances of the death, the geography or relationship to the deceased.

Profile:
Bonnie Carroll is the President and Founder of TAPS and directs three areas of the organization, including Survivor Outreach, Survivor Response, and Administration/Finance. Bonnie also serves as the sole officer of the nonprofit corporation on the staff. Bonnie is a surviving Army spouse, an Air Force Reserve Officer (IRR), and a former member of the Board of the Association of Death Education and Counseling. As a military officer, she has been a casualty officer in several cases and also serves as Chief of Casualty Operations for the Air Force. As a presidential appointee, Bonnie served as White House Liaison to the Department of Veterans Affairs, expanding grief counseling to surviving families, and served in Baghdad Iraq as a Senior Program Administrator. She holds degrees from American University and Springfield College, and completed Harvard University's Executive Leadership Program.

TAPS provides comfort and care through peer-based emotional support for all who are grieving a death from those who truly understand. This core service of TAPS brings together a national family of all who are grieving to share their pain and find hope and healing. The TAPS magazine, online chats, regional care groups and the one to one peer mentor program are ways TAPS engages survivors in peer-based support.

TAPS offers case work assistance by providing compassionate assistance for all the needs a family may have, including access to pro bono legal assistance, emergency financial resources, information on state and federal survivor benefits, and connections to private social service support for survivors.

Program Description:
TAPS provides community based grief support through integrating families with care in their local community, including connection to unlimited free clinical grief counseling; trama resources; local area support groups that are individually researched by TAPS for each survivor. In 2012, 840 surviving family members received free clinical grief counseling through a connection made by TAPS.

Program Description:
The national military survivor helpline is answered live by TAPS at all times - 24/7/365 - with comfort and care from peer professionals who endure the caller has open access to all that TAPS provides, including case work follow up and community based response. Continuously operational since 1994, in 2012 11,869 calls were received by the TAPS National Military Survivor Helpline.

Program Description:
TAPS hosts special events across the country that bring surviving loved ones together in a healing environment through facilitated activities focused on coping strategies and peer bonding. In 2012, TAPS helps 43 such gatherings, attended by 2,525 adults and 1,228 children.
