Cross-Cultural Solutions: A New Year, A Renewed Dedication

January 26, 2010

In the shadow of Martin Luther King Jr. Day — a nationally recognized day of service — Cross-Cultural Solutions (CCS) is aiming to motivate people everywhere to keep the spirit to serve alive, by kicking off a full year of service.

CCS is encouraging people to volunteer whenever and wherever they can in order to keep the inspiration to serve all year long alive. 2010 is a particularly meaningful year for CCS — the organization will celebrate its 15th anniversary, and 25,000th volunteer. And CCS is planning a series of initiatives this year to engage communities at home and abroad, instilling the value of service to all, and spreading both awareness and opportunities to those who may not typically have access to an organization such as CCS.

As part of one initiative to engage the local community in international volunteering, CCS is partnering with Global Potential (GP), a New York-based nonprofit that equips urban youth from low-income communities with the skills and perspective to effect positive change in their lives, neighborhoods, and the global community. GP does this through trainings on leadership, social entrepreneurship, and global awareness, and by providing an international rural living and volunteer service experience.

CCS will provide four scholarships to low-income, urban youth aged 18 to 25, to participate on a CCS program in Costa Rica, Guatemala, or Peru. With the dedicated support of CCS and GP, the scholarship recipients will fundraise for any other costs associated with their trip, including airfare and spending money for daily expenses.

Each year, CCS donates the equivalent of one percent of net revenue to make international volunteering possible for people who cannot afford the program fee. In previous years, CCS has worked with World Bridges and Summer Search — U.S. organizations with similar goals as Global Potential.

About Cross-Cultural Solutions

Cross-Cultural Solutions was founded in 1995 and now operates volunteer programs in 12 countries across the world in partnership with sustainable community initiatives. As a not-for-profit organization with no political or religious affiliations, CCS brings people together to work side-by-side while sharing perspectives and fostering cultural understanding.
